New Fire Boat in Sausalito Waters

Fireboat
Liberty, the new fire boat operated by the Southern Marin Fire Protection District
As of July 12, a new fire boat is on active duty in the waters of Southern Marin. In addition to responding to emergencies on Richardson Bay, the Southern Marin Fire Protection District's new fire boat, Liberty, will respond to all areas of the San Francisco and San Pablo bays as part of a regional fleet of emergency vessels.

Liberty replaces an older fire boat that will be sold to the San Rafael Fire Department. The new 40' boat is larger than its predecessor and can handle heavier seas. Its shallow draft will allow it to operate close to shore and in the northern part of Richardson Bay. Technology upgrades include forward-looking infrared (FLIR), chemical and radiation detection equipment, and pumps capable of spraying approximately 2,000 gallons of water per minute.

The $1 million fire boat was funded with $750,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and $250,000 in matching local funds. Any questions about the new fire boat may be directed to the Southern Marin Fire Protection District at (415) 388-8182.

Faulty Ground Wire Caused Fireworks Delay on July 4

Fireworks
A scene from the 4th of July fireworks
A faulty ground wire was behind the delayed start of this year's 4th of July fireworks, according to Parks and Recreation Director Mike Langford. The fireworks were scheduled to begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. but were delayed 45 minutes while repairs were underway.

Langford explains, "Each firework has two wires going to it, one being a firing wire controlled by the operator, the other a ground wire which travels around the firing platform to every firework. The crew from Pyro Spectacular identified the defective ground wire prior to the start of the show and had to rewire all 804 fireworks (over 500 lbs.) while on a moving barge in the dark."

Sausalito's annual 4th of July fireworks are funded by donations, not tax dollars. The Parks and Recreation Department is still short of funds this year, so please donate if you enjoyed the fireworks and would like to keep the tradition going. Donations are collected at the Parks and Recreation office at City Hall and at Jazz and Blues by the Bay concerts — or you can donate online at sausalito4thofjuly.com.

Circus Coming to Marinship Park

Flynn Creek Circus
A big red-and-white tent belonging to Flynn Creek Circus will be going up in Marinship Park on Monday, July 22 for shows that will take place from Thursday, July 25 through Sunday, July 28. The shows are not affiliated with the City of Sausalito; this is the third consecutive year that Flynn Creek Circus is renting the lawn area of the park from the Parks and Recreation Department.

The Flynn Creek Circus is people-only, so there won't be any animal noises emanating from the park. If you are accustomed to using the lawn area of Marinship Park, please make use of other City of Sausalito parks during the week of July 22. Any questions or concerns about the circus or Marinship Park may be directed to Julie Myers at jmyers@sausalito.gov or (415) 289-4198.

Get Ready for the Next Earthquake

Searles Valley
Earth movement from the Searles Valley earthquake on July 5, 2019 (USGS)
Earthquakes are a natural, sudden, and violent shaking of the Earth's surface. They are caused by the shifting of underground rock. Earthquakes can cause buildings to collapse and heavy items to fall, resulting in injuries and property damage.

Here's how you can prepare your home and family for the next earthquake:
  • Secure items such as televisions and objects that hang on walls. Store heavy and breakable objects on low shelves.
  • Practice DROP, COVER, THEN HOLD ON with family and coworkers.
  • Create a family emergency communications plan. Plan where to meet if you get separated.
  • Make an emergency kit that includes enough food and water for at least three days, a flashlight, a fire extinguisher, and a whistle. Consider your family's specific needs, including medications. Do not forget the needs of your pets.
  • Consider a retrofit of your building to correct structural issues that make it vulnerable to collapse during an earthquake.
If an earthquake happens, protect yourself right away:
  • Drop, cover, then hold on! Drop to your hands and knees. Cover your head and neck with your arms. Hold on to any sturdy furniture until the shaking stops. Crawl only if you can reach better cover safely.
  • If in bed, stay there and cover your head and neck with a pillow.
  • If inside, stay there until shaking stops. Do not run outside.
  • If in a vehicle, stop in a clear area that is away from buildings, trees, overpasses, or utility wires.
  • If you're in a high-rise building, expect fire alarms and sprinklers to activate. Do not use elevators.
  • If near slopes, cliffs, or mountains, be alert for falling rocks and landslides.
  • Be aware of the tsunami warning systems in your area.
Be safe after an earthquake:
  • Expect aftershocks to follow the largest shock of an earthquake.
  • Check yourself for injury and aid others if you have training.
  • If in a damaged building, go outside and quickly move away from the building.
  • Do not enter damaged buildings.
  • If you are trapped, cover your mouth. Send a text, bang on a pipe or wall, or use a whistle instead of shouting so that rescuers can locate you.
  • If you are in an area that may experience tsunamis, go inland or to higher ground immediately after the shaking stops.
  • Save phone calls for emergencies.
  • Once safe, monitor local news reports via battery-operated radio, TV, social media, and cell phone text alerts for emergency information and instructions.
Any questions about disaster preparedness in Sausalito may be directed to Lieutenant Bill Fraass at (415) 289-4171 or bfraass@sausalito.gov.

Become a Volunteer Driver for Call a Ride for Sausalito Seniors

CARSS Logo
Call a Ride for Sausalito Seniors (CARSS) was founded in 2015 as a result of the hard work of the City's Age Friendly Task Force. After surveying the community, the task force developed a plan prioritizing the needs of aging residents, and local transportation was at the top of the list.

In 2018, CARSS and its team of volunteer drivers provided more than 1,600 rides to residents of Sausalito and the floating homes who are age 60 and older. Rides are offered Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00.p.m.

Unfortunately, CARSS is running low on volunteer drivers. If you have been thinking about volunteering in Sausalito, this is a great time to get started. CARSS requests that volunteers drive a minimum of one four-hour shift per month.

To start the application process to become a CARSS driver, please call (415) 944-5474 or fill out an online application. CARSS is a City of Sausalito program managed by Sausalito Village, a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides a support network for seniors who want to age in place.
