Here are Five Things to Know this month about riding in and around Rockland County.
- Let's Get Social: A fine time was had by all who attended the June 26 social at Tallman State Park Pool Club enjoying drinks, consuming tasty apps and talking bike apps by the Hudson River in Piermont. Plan to join us for two upcoming cycling & social events on Sat Aug 3 for an early lunch at Playa Cancun in Stony Point and Wed Aug 21 at 6:30p at the Hudson Water Club in Stony Point.
 ICYMI: The RBC co-sponsored or promoted two community bike ride slow rolls in June, Rolling By The River in Upper Nyack on 6/2 and the Piermont Slow Bike ride on 6/23. Stay tuned for more events like these in the fall!
- Bicycle Skills training on July 17: Bring your bike and helmet to Rockland Lake State Park Parking Lot #4 (near the south entrance) at 6:30p when club member and professional trainer Rob Panzera will lead us through a bike riding skills workshop. Learn better bike control and handling, how to shift on flats and climbs, advanced turning and other skills. RBC members can login and register for this session at RocklandBicyclingClub.org. Non-members who want to attend should email RocklandBike@gmail.com.

- Last month, the Orangetown Town Council passed a law which prohibits side by side cycling. The law duplicates existing laws in Piermont and S Nyack, however, it adds serious fines and possible jail time for violations. The RBC has been speaking with the BTCNJ and the NYCC regarding shared concerns about how it will be enforced, including issues like riding two abreast on shoulders, bunching up at stop lights, and how police will handle one group of cyclists passing another. Stay tuned for updates. Until then -- stay single! It's safer. And it's also the law in Orangetown.
 The Greenbush Rd / Rt 303 Bypass officially opened with a ribbon cutting on July 13 attended by RBC members, NYS Senator David Carlucci, Rockland County Legislator Harriet Cornell, Orangetown Supervisor Chris Day and former supervisor and project champion Andy Stewart. RBC President Mike Hays represented the club speaking about the need to create more bike/ped infrastructure. The 1/4 mile path parallels Rt 303 near the site of a fatal crash with a tractor trailer that killed cyclist Robert Carl Pinckert in 2003.
