From LWV President

We are all appalled by the mass murders which have taken place this week in California, Texas and Ohio.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival - a long standing tradition of fun and celebration of all thing garlic (including ice cream) - was shattered by mass murder. Shoppers in El Paso were gunned down indiscriminately. A family member was killed in a mass killing rampage in Dayton. This is just the latest in a long series of bloodletting that the American people across the country have endured. I think we all must acknowledge our anger and frustration that this kind of slaughter can continue under the guise of 'constitutional rights'. But getting past that entirely justifiable outrage, we need to continue to work for legislation that promotes gun safely.

However - we all need to acknowledge that this is really about Voting Rights. Unless all American citizens can vote, we are not going to get past this. Until barriers to voting are eliminated - Voter ID, restrictive registration requirements, gerrymandering - are eliminated, we can't pass legislation that will make a difference. It all comes back to the vote. The LWV needs to defend the right of all American citizens to vote.

And as a believing Christian I offer my deep personal condolences to the families of the victims of the mass murders. I am praying for you.

THIS SATURDAY: TRAINING FOR SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES FIRST

The League of Women Voters of California, along with scores of other civic and pro-education organizations, has as a top priority this year to pass a proposition that will appear on the November 2020 ballot. The campaign is now known as Schools and Communities First! The measure would reform Proposition 13 by assessing commercial property at its market value, not purchase price, while leaving intact all provisions protecting homeowners and renters.

Sign up by e-mailing info@lwvbae.org or phoning the League office (510 843-8824)

Bring a friend and join the campaign by coming to the training on 8/10 at our Berkeley office.

The League Joins Partners in Solidarity and Action Statement Against White Supremacy

In the wake of tragic mass shootings on El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH last weekend, the League of Women Voters of the United States joined the Leadership Conference and other partner organizations, including Voto Latino and the NAACP LDF, in condemning white supremacy and demanding real reform to combat hate.

“The tragedies of this past weekend represent a confluence of two dangerous forces: the rise of white supremacist terror and our federal government’s inaction on commonsense gun safety. Both deserve sweeping and consequential action by our elected leaders. Every person in our country should feel safe while shopping, enjoying a night out with friends, attending school or religious services, or engaging in any other lawful activity. Instead, white supremacist violence against communities of color continues to escalate under the administration’s watch.

“When the president and his enablers routinely denigrate and dehumanize certain communities, he gives permission to white supremacists to commit horrific violence — violence that is at a level unprecedented in more than 20 years. None of this is acceptable. None of this is normal. Our organizations are united in saying that Members of Congress can no longer look away as communities of color are murdered with impunity. We must all unite and demand accountability.”
