Thank you for supporting our 2019 touring production:
Dear Friends,

Beacon Theatre Productions has been incredibly active this Spring and Summer, and we are excited to share with you a recap of our recent touring production, Letters to Aunt Hattie written and directed by Gigi McGraw.
Where did the production tour and for what communities?
With the support of individuals like you along with foundations such as the PA Abolition Society and the Charlotte Cushman Foundation, we were able to offer 16 free performances for communities and neighborhoods! The production toured to the following locations and communities:
  • 4 libraries, 4 schools, 3 churches, a condominium community
  • ASAP after school program at Cecil B Moore Recreational Center
  • Awbury Arboretum in Germantown
  • The University of PA Memory Café
We partnered with Historic Fair Hill in the Fair Hill area of Philadelphia to perform Letters to Aunt Hattie twice in the Julia de Burgos School library and at a student essay awards contest. Our hearts were warmed as we heard students read excerpts from their winning essays describing how Harriet Forten Purvis’ and Charlotte Forten Grimké’s lives inspired them to persevere, not give up, and work toward positive social change.
Our fifth graders were fascinated by Gigi who was both actor and playwright as she changed back and forth from a 50-year-old woman to a 17-year-old girl and brought them both to life from 150 years ago in Philadelphia. Our students asked 20 minutes of questions afterward, and one teacher was in tears seeing how they rose to the occasion.  You gave them something true and real and of high quality and they responded!

Your support made a difference.
We are committed to paying our artists, and providing free or low cost inspiring theatrical performances for the public. But we can’t do it alone! Grants from the PA Abolition Society and the Charlotte Cushman Foundation, plus the financial support of patrons like YOU enabled us to subsidize performances for those who could not afford to pay.
What's next?
We are now in the process of developing our next touring play called Under the Bonnet about the nineteenth century women’s rights activist, Lucretia Mott.  Lucretia Mott is buried in the Historic Fair Hill Burial Ground, and the La Mott area of Cheltenham Township is named after her. Check out our website for further reading about Lucretia Mott: CLICK HERE FOR FURTHER READING.

Donations to support BTP's newest production,
Under the Bonnet, are especially appreciated!
