Welcome to our August collection of articles and ideas for clever business owners and operators.

In this month's edition we have an important notice for labour hire businesses, we give you some advice around your agreements and we wrap up BCorp month: 'Better Business for a Better World' by talking about how we were selected as part of the 2018 Best For The World Honorees List.

Important notice for labour hire businesses

Our employment law expert, Rachel Derrico, discusses the new Victorian Labour Hire Laws.

From 30 October 2019 substantial penalties will apply to labour hire providers who don’t have a licence. Unlicensed agencies may be liable for penalties up to $126,856 for natural persons, or $508,424 for body corporates. Hosts entering into arrangements with an unlicensed agency could be liable for the same.

If you are unsure whether you are a labour hire provider or if you would like any assistance in applying for a licence, please do not hesitate to contact us.

My lawyer is not miserable and its frankly disorienting! Why working flexibly has made all the difference for me

Warning: You will not be the slightest bit wiser about any point of law (or lawyering generally) at the conclusion of this blog post. In fact, your idea of what a lawyer actually does will perhaps be even less clear. You see, this is somewhat of an explanatory post. A blanket response to two questions I’ve been repeatedly asked lately:

  • Where the hell are you?
  • What’s so great about working at Rankin that you guys won a Law Institute of Victoria wellbeing award?

Better Business for a Better World

Last year Rankin Business Lawyers were selected as part of the 2018 Best For The World Honorees List of nearly 1,000 top performing B Corps. We made up part of the 69 Australian and New Zealand B Corps that were recognised.

The Best For Workers list includes businesses that earned a Workers score in the top 10 percent of more than 2,400 Certified B Corporations on the B Impact Assessment. The assessment measures a company's impact on its workers, community, customers and the environment. To certify as B Corporations, companies like us must complete the full assessment and have their answers verified by B Lab.

The Workers section of the B Impact Assessment assesses the company’s relationship with its workforce. It measures how the company treats its workers through compensation, benefits, training and ownership opportunities provided to workers. The category also focuses on the overall work environment within the company by assessing management/worker communication, job flexibility, corporate culture, and worker health and safety practices.

Honorees scoring in the top 10 percent set a gold standard for the high impact that business as a force for good can make on employees around the world.

We know treating our employees well is every bit as important as profits, and that’s how we run our business.

Walk & Shine - Australia’s miracle man wins a fight no one else could

Defying the odds is a phrase used to admire the extraordinary feats people overcome where the weight of chance is not in their favour. But miracles are entirely different, the odds of favourable outcomes are almost inconceivably impossible - negligible to be exact, which is what makes miracles, just that, miracles.

On the reckoning of all probabilities, Terry Mitropoulos should be dead, but isn’t! Terry is Australia’s own miracle story. His story perverts what we see as defying the odds, and transcends into a realm we can hardly imagine anyone could possibly go through.

His plight redefines human endeavour and inspires in us the notion that hope and faith are powerful mindsets - greater than we have ever known them to be.

The 2016 F.O.T.Y. proved medical experts wrong. In 2010, Terry developed a brain tumour, where his first brain operation became one of 13. His tumour, was the beginning of his fight to stay alive.
