Call for Presentations – The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) invites presentation submissions for the 2019 Annual Conference, October 8-10, 2019 in Quebec City at the Hôtel Château Laurier Québec. The presentation should be relevant to farm safety and health issues. This could include research, or initiative, project or program aimed at improving the safety and health for farmers, ranchers, farm families, workers, visitors, and farming communities. Presentation submissions are due July 31, 2019 - DEADLINE EXTENDED!

Appel aux présentations – L’Association canadienne de sécurité agricole (ACSA) lance un appel aux présentations pour sa conférence annuelle 2019 qui se tiendra les 8, 9 et 10 octobre à l’hôtel Château Laurier Québec à Québec.  Les présentations doivent être pertinentes aux enjeux en matière de sécurité et de santé agricoles. Il peut s’agir de projets de recherche, d’initiatives, de projets ou de programmes ciblant l’amélioration de la sécurité et de la santé pour les agriculteurs, les propriétaires de ranch, les familles agricoles, les travailleurs, les visiteurs et les communautés agricoles. La date limite des propositions de présentation est le 31 juillet 2019 - DATE LIMITE PROLONGÉE!

Consultations Begin Online for Replacing Alberta's Bill 6 – grainews.ca (The Prairies), July 13, 2019:  A new online survey and direct consultations this summer are expected to inform the new Alberta government’s plans to swap out its predecessor’s legislation on farm and ranch worker protection. Alberta’s governing United Conservatives — who made repeal and replacement of Bill 6 a core plank of their platform before unseating the NDP government back in April — published an online survey Friday on topics covered in the legislation.  Along with the online survey, which will be open to the general public until Aug. 31, Agriculture Minister Devin Dreeshen said Friday he will take a “consultation tour” this summer, “meeting with farmers, ranchers and organizations across the province.” (Related article: Provincial Government Wants Feedback on Farm Workplace Safety).

New Support Line Availalbe for Alberta Farmers – ponokanews.com (AB), July 13, 2019:  A new information hotline to help those involved in agriculture is ready, willing and able to assist in navigating the recently introduced regulatory framework. The hotline — 1-833-9AG-SAFE (942-7233) — which is available 24 hours per day year-round and confidential went live on June 14. AgSafe Alberta, an industry-led agency created last year, was designed to help deliver and develop farm safety management programs and resources in order to give Alberta agricultural operations assistance when dealing with incidents. The group has a board of directors consisting of representation from 26 crop and livestock producer groups along with a small number of staff.

Agriculture Foreign Workers Get New Path to Residency – grainews.ca (The Prairies), July 12, 2019:  The federal government has announced a pilot program that will make it easier for farms and food companies to maintain workers they recruit from around the world. Ahmed Hussen, minister for immigration, refugees and citizenship, announced the program Friday at Maple Leaf Foods in Mississauga. The program, called the Agri-Food Immigration Pilot Project, will allow temporary foreign workers to apply for permanent residency after a year of employment in Canada in the past three years.

Training Tackles Wisconsin Mental Health Crisis – producer.com (SK), July 11, 2019:  Specialists in central Wisconsin are teaching a new mental-health first-aid program to rural community members, helping to address a crisis among farmers in the region. The training saw an instructor teach various skills to participants, helping them understand what to do when they know or believe someone is struggling with mental health. “It’s very similar to first-aid in that it administers basic care and gets someone to professional care,” project lead Josie Rudolphi, an associate scientist with the National Farm Medicine Center, said in an interview after discussing the program in late June during the Child Agricultural Injury Prevention workshop in Des Moines.

Child Farm Accident Level Still Alarms Advocates – producer.com (SK), July 11, 2019:  Safety advocates are continuing to push for changes that aim to reduce danger for children on farms, citing statistics that show little improvement. Speaking during a recent child safety conference in Des Moines, agricultural youth safety specialist Marsha Salzwedel said evidence suggests child death numbers remain unchanged even though injuries have dropped. “Injury numbers have gone down, so we know that hopefully that’s due to some of the work we are doing,” said Salzwedel of the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety during the Child Agricultural Injury Prevention workshop.

Safe Communities Humboldt and Area Receives Funding From City – discoverhumboldt.com (SK), July 9, 2019:  The work of Safe Communities Humboldt and Area extends over a wide variety of interests, and that work would not be possible without grants and sponsorships. The City of Humboldt recognized the value of the organization with a grant of $15,000 to support their efforts. The presentation at City Hall happened on July 5. Executive Director of Safe Communities Humboldt and Area Shari Hinz is appreciative of the funding provided by the city. Hinz commented, "We've been fortunate that the City of Humboldt has provided support to our organization since its inception back in 2005, and for 2019, the city approved a donation of $15,000 in their budget."

Les traumatismes physiques plus mortels en milieu rural, selon une étude de l’Université Laval – lequotidien.com (PQ), le 8 juillet 2019:  Au Québec, les victimes de traumatismes physiques sont trois fois plus à risque d’en mourir si elles sont soignées en milieu rural plutôt qu’en ville, constatent des chercheurs de l’Université Laval. Le docteur Richard Fleet et ses collègues ont analysé des données provenant de 26 urgences d’hôpitaux situés dans des agglomérations de moins de 15 000 habitants et de 33 centres de traumatologie urbains. Les détails de leur étude sont présentés dans une récente édition de la revue scientifique BMJ Open.

'We Are Not Wired for Safety' – sachem.ca (ON), July 8, 2019:  About 150 people gathered at the Binbrook Fairgrounds to learn more about how to be aware of and avoid the potential dangers in day-to-day life. “We are not wired for safety. Our brains are wired to do things as quickly as possible,” said Desiree D’Souza, with Workplace Safety and Prevention Services, one of the presenters of the evening. She had guests play a look-alike game, where they tried to identify which samples were harmless, like grape juice or maple syrup, and which were chemicals, like motor oil or drain cleaner, by sight alone. Other stations taught guests about things like fire safety and personal protective equipment. The evening ended with a presentation from a keynote speaker from War Amps.



Deaths/Décès

Amherstburg Man Dies in Farming Accident at WETRA – windsor.ctvnews.ca (ON), July 10, 2019:  The Windsor Essex Therapeutic Riding Association is mourning the death of one of their farming partners. The non-profit group issued a news release Wednesday, saying "we are heartbroken by the tragic event that occurred (Tuesday) night during the hay harvest, which resulted in the fatality of one of our farming partners." The victim is 27-year-old Alex Joseph Durham of Amherstburg. Police say Durham was transported to hospital by Essex-Windsor EMS, where he succumbed to his injuries after he was located under the rear tire of a hay baler on the farm property.

Motorist Charged with DUI After Truck Collides with Farm Tractor – timminspress.com (ON), July 11, 2019:  A motorist has been charged with impaired driving following a collision Tuesday on Highway 101 in involving a pickup truck and a farm tractor. On Tuesday, at approximately 1 p.m., members of the South Porcupine Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision in Taylor Township. Three people were taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Standard field sobriety testing was conducted on the driver of the pickup and he was subsequently arrested.

Three Fire Companies in Perry County Get Tool for Grain Bin Entrapment Rescues – fox43.com (US), July 13, 2019:  Rescuing local farmers from dangerous accidents just got a little easier for a few fire companies. The Landisburg Fire Department teaming up with Shermans Dale Fire Company and Blain Volunteer Fire Company to get a grant from Nationwide Insurance and the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety. The grant paid for a grain bin rescue tube which will be used to rescue someone trapped in a grain bin. The fire companies held an introduction and demonstration at the Landisburg Fire Department to show how important the tool is to save lives.

ASAI Reminds Advertisers of Rules When Featuring Children In Farm Settings  – checkout.ie (Ireland), July 12, 2019:  The Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland (ASAI), today said that it is reminding advertisers of its requirements when creating ads, that include children that are set in an agricultural setting. The group issued a statement ahead of Farm Stafety week, which commences on Monday 15 July, 2019. The organisation, which is the independent self-regulatory body committed to promoting the highest standards of marketing communications in Ireland said that it 'is particularly keen to highlight what advertisers need to be aware of when featuring children in adverts that have an agricultural focus'.

 

Deaths/Décès

Man Dead After Tractor Rollover Near Portland Identified – inforum.com (US), July 13, 2019:  A man driving a John Deere 3020 died after the tractor rolled onto its top near Portland about 5:13 p.m on Friday, July 12, according to North Dakota Highway Patrol. The tractor, driven by 77-year-old Alton Anderson, was pulling a sickle mower that was cutting grass for hay. As Anderson turned to travel around a culvert opening in the bottom of the ditch, the tractor's front right tire encountered a sinkhole. The tire dropped into the hole, causing the tractor to roll and crush Anderson. He died at the scene.

4-Year-Old Boy Killed in Lancashire Farm Accident – agriland.co.uk (UK), July 11, 2019:  The family of a four-year-old boy tragically killed in a farm accident Lancashire have said tractors and animals were his biggest passion. Police were called at around 11:15am on Monday (July 8) following a report that a young boy had been seriously injured at a farm in Newchurch-in-Pendle. The boy suffered a serious head injury following a collision with a small telehandler-type vehicle. Emergency services attended; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nevis Woman, 18, Dies in Rollover Crash – parkrapidsenterprise.com (US), July 10, 2019:  Anneka Elizabeth Davis, 18, of Nevis was killed Friday in a car-tractor collision in White Oak Township. According to a Minnesota State Patrol crash report, the accident occurred at 11:22 a.m. when a 1989 Chevrolet Caprice driven by an unidentified 17-year-old male was eastbound on 190th St. and crested the hill at 335th Ave. The Caprice collided with a westbound farm tractor that was pulling a haybine. The car went into the ditch and rolled over. Davis, a passenger who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries and was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.

Pilot Injured in Agricultural Helicopter Crash – newschannel15.com (US), July 8, 2019:  A Kentucky pilot was injured in a agricultural helicopter crash. It crashed while spring a corn field. The helicopter was spraying a corn field. Officials found the chopper destroyed in a field near Kummer Road and Schweizer Road about five miles south of Franklin.
