Dear Friends,
For the July issue of On This Corner, we’re featuring FUN at First Pres! You can probably guess that “fun” is one of my favorite personal core values. While many of us are taking summer vacations, here at church several of our ministries are planning fun events including the youth beach day on July 18, the young adult hike on July 20, the youth barbecue party at Lake Anza on July 25…and of course our Vacation Bible School from July 29–August 2. I signed up with 35 First Pres folks for the Extending Sanctuary House of Hope “Work Party” on July 6—even using a pick and shovel for four hours can be fun!
Our congregants also lead fun church activities…like inviting the First Pres community to an Oakland A’s game, tailgate, and fireworks on Saturday, July 27. There has been a tradition of First Pres congregants hosting A's game gatherings. Originally led by die-hard A's fan Susan Russell more than 25 years ago, this tradition has been carried on by EC1 and EC3 over the past six years. Read the article below to learn more.
Sometimes we can take ourselves too seriously, and having fun in community and fellowship is a way to live into glorifying God and enjoying Him and all he has provided for us!
With gratitude in being your pastor,
Steve Schibsted
Interim Senior Pastor
