Thank you for your generosity

Thank you for your help with a number of pressing ‘bare necessities’ we wrote to you about last time, we were overwhelmed by your generous response! Your kind donations have already enabled work to start replacing the stove, which you will remember was causing hazardous working conditions for the dedicated cooks, who work so hard to feed the 340 children at Uzima. You can see from the picture, that work is well underway! We are hoping to start work on the buckling Water Tower next.

There has been a recent outbreak of typhoid at Uzima which is probably due to the children drinking contaminated water at home. Many children have been very ill and some have been admitted to hospital. While the trustees were praying about this situation, a text came through from a supporter, offering to pay for the whole school to be vaccinated! We are at present waiting for the vaccines to arrive before we can get these vulnerable children (and their teachers) protected. Thank you Lord!

Before we go any further, let's share some dates for your diary!

Child Sponsorship

In February 2018, we embarked upon our yearly trip to Uzima. During the trip, we were followed by a young boy literally in rags, curious to know what we were doing in Africa. In fact, he really tore at the old heart strings as he followed us to the gates of Uzima and watched us through the fence. Just before we left, we found out more about him - he is HIV positive and his remaining parent isn't able to pay for clothing, let alone an education.

With the help of Evans, teachers and staff at Uzima, he was enrolled and quickly sponsored. He now has two meals a day, medical care, a new school uniform and an education - something he would be totally unable to attain otherwise. You can see delight on his face pictured here, that someone overseas cares for him and sent him a card and gift.

See how a small gift can make the world of difference.

Please help us in supporting these children with daily food, an education and hope for a better future. A regular income helps us to to plan ahead and support these children even better.

Tom
Age 10

Tom lives a long way from Uzima, often walking for over an hour to get to school each morning. His grandmother chose to take him on, after his mother died and his father left. However, she struggles to provide for him and his siblings, as she's been wheelchair-bound for the last 25 years. He also has a younger sister and 2 older brothers. When we visited Uzima, we found out that Tom has been suffering from stomach ache but thanks to Uzima and the work of those at Buburi Clinic, he is now well. At school he enjoys learning English and playing with his friends during break times. At home, along with his brothers, he helps to wash plates and fetch water. He also told me that his neighbours help to care for his family due to his grandmother’s disability. When he leaves Uzima, Tom told me that he wants to be a driver. He is thankful for all the help which is provided by the school and the sponsors. We know from visiting his house, that he especially enjoyed the little party we threw before we left!

Angelica
Age 11

Angelica lives near Uzima, walking twenty minutes every day to school. She lives with her grandmother, who sells vegetables for a living, and has 2 brothers and 1 sister, none of which attend Uzima. Her parents divorced shortly before she was admitted to Uzima, her mother left and remarried away from the area. While at school, she enjoys maths and science and during break times, she likes skipping and playing with her friends. “When the sponsors come, they bring presents which I am very grateful for, particularly clothes, shoes and stationary equipment”. She is thankful for the free medical care which is provided, and says she has been there for treatment, after contracting malaria. She wants her sponsors to know about her elderly grandmother and the difficulties at home. She says that she helps to wash plates and clean the house, along with her siblings, as her grandmother is unable to fulfil all their basic needs.

Henry
Age 7

Henry lives a long way from Uzima, often walking for over an hour, on his own, to school each morning. After his parents died, he was admitted to Uzima and now lives with his grandmother, who is a farmer, and an older sister. When at home, he helps fetch water, clean the compound and wash dishes. When at school, he enjoys learning maths and playing football with his friends. While visiting in February, we found out that he had been to Buburi Clinic after breaking his elbow. Fortunately, he recovered and is now well. He told us that he wants his sponsor to be aware of his "lack of bedding- I sleep on a mat". He also told us that he did not have a mosquito net. We made it a priority to provide him with one before we left. He frequently expressed how grateful he was for us visiting from the UK and was thankful for the small gifts we provided.

Lola
Age 12

Lola lives near Uzima, walking half an hour to school each morning. She lives with her mother, after her parents divorced and her father moved away, as well as her two brothers and three sisters. During lesson time, she enjoys maths and Swahili, and told me that when she leaves Uzima, she wants to become a pilot. At break time, she enjoys skipping the rope and playing with her friends. While at home, she helps to wash plates and clean the compound. “I am grateful for a good education and support from the sponsors”. She also told me that she’s been to Buburi Clinic for treatment for a swelling on her head. Thanks to the amazing work of the medical staff at Buburi, she is now well.

Go Phil!
Phil's Triathlon this Sunday

On Sunday 22nd September, Phil Mowle will be taking part in the West Wight Triathlon to raise money to give a new sweatshirt to each child at Uzima. Their sweaters are nearly 2 years old now, and some are very worn. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could raise enough for them all to have one this visit? (It could even be an early Christmas gift, if you were able to donate to Phil's amazing efforts for your sponsored child, or any of the children who need one).
Go Phil! We look forward to seeing more pictures.

None of the Nursery age children have ever had a sweatshirt and most children at Uzima have only ever had one new item of clothing in their lives.

So please sponsor Phil and help his chosen cause.

Back to School!

The children’s shoes are also literally worn out and we need to buy new ones during our next visit. Lots of them walk a very long way (some over an hour) to get to school each morning and their shoes protect their feet from injury and infection from jiggers. Many children live in bare feet and may not have any shoes at all. Please, can you help?
