Mum's guide to Harpenden
The Word About Town
Issue 27, July 2019
Welcome
Welcome to our summer newsletter. Last issue we launched our 2019 Mum’s guide to Harpenden Awards and we’re delighted to say that they were once again a huge success. Over 1600 people voted and some categories were extremely close! Thank you all for taking the time to vote.   This year, on 5th July 2019, we held an Awards Ceremony for all our finalists and they told us in person how much it means to them to be involved in the Awards and to have their local businesses recognised!  Thank you to them for attending  and to Deputy Mayor, Mrs Nicola Linacre, for presenting the awards.  So, without further ado, we can confirm the winners of the Mum's guide to Harpenden Awards 2019 are...

FizzBug
www.fizzbug.co.uk
FizzBug will be running from 22nd July - 30th August and offers interesting and fun clubs for 3-15 year olds.

Senior Fest @ FizzBug (new for 2019) - activities for young people, aged 11-15, this summer.
Our aim is to support them throughout the holidays within a safe and welcoming environment. Various clubs will be running each day and there will be opportunities to discuss a wide range of topics and learn first hand about different careers. Hands-on classes in our ‘enrichment’ programme will include DJ’ing, film-making, music, animation, art, hairdressing, sports coaching, Education (teaching), Psychology, German, Spanish and Business Management, Biomedical Sciences, English and Education, US History and Engineering. Plus we have a chill out teepee just for the Seniors with bean bags and table tennis.

We will have a daily fitness session to help maintain and improve their physical and mental health. There will be a choice of daily activities which caters for everyone’s needs, be it creative, adventurous, academic or sporty. This is also a great opportunity to meet new friends from other schools and build lasting relationships and with our ‘no phone’ policy, communication is essential!

Outdoor Explorer's Club 3 -11 year olds - exploring the magic of nature and empowering children to participate and take up meaningful environmental activities and projects within the school.
We run a practical and fun club that explains key ideas for wildlife exploration, ensuring children have all the tools they need to become a true nature detective. Identifying trees and plants, knowing what plants are needed for wildlife to flourish are all taught in the club. Part of the adventure is learning new skills including making their own bug and bird houses. If your child loves the outdoors, this is the club for them.

Our popular FizzBug's Cookery School & SING are also running.

We offer half days, 3/4 days (0900-1500) and full days (0830-1730) . If you need extended hours, you will be able to book early drop-off (0800), breakfast club (0730), late pick-up (1800) and supper club (1845) in addition to this club. For the 'little Fizz or Bugs' (3 & 4 year olds) we offer free settling-in sessions and 'new start' Wednesday's, perfect for children starting Reception in September.

For more information please email Kate@fizzbug.co.uk or visit our website.  Information on each club is under the 'sessions' heading. You can book spaces now and pay nearer your chosen dates. We also accept childcare vouchers.

Playpark Action Rothamsted Committee (PARC)

The current Rothamsted Park play area equipment is very outdated and is near to the end of its life.  Playpark Action Rothamsted Committee (PARC) was established to help raise funds to create a flagship play area for Harpenden and the surrounding towns and villages.  A place where friends and families can come together and spend more time.

PARC continues to work closely with the local community to develop designs that are inclusive and meet the needs of all age groups.  They have the support of Bim Afolami MP and are working closely with St Albans City and District Council.

An estimated £250 000 is required to deliver the project.  This is our greatest challenge! A small amount of funding has already been secured and a number of fundraising events, setting out to involve the whole community in raising the funds, are in the pipeline.

With 2019 centred around fundraising, PARC strives to commence installation in 2020.  This is ambitious and relies on the support of the community.  This a fantastic opportunity to get involved with a community project and we need the residents of Harpenden to get on board and support PARC!  If any businesses or individuals alike would be interested in supporting us, please contact us at emailparc@gmail.com.

We will also be looking for volunteers to support our stand at a number of local events.  If you would be interested in helping, please get in touch.

The Human Milk Foundation is a charity based at Rothamsted Institute, Harpenden. We provide donor human milk to sick premature babies in the neonatal intensive care units at our local hospitals including Luton & Dunstable Hospital, The Lister and Watford General. Much like donated human blood, donor milk can be life-saving. A leading cause of death for premature babies is a condition called necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). Human milk protects babies against NEC - when mum cannot produce milk, donor milk acts like a medicine to protect the baby. We need help to raise more funds so we can help more babies. Find out more here.
Harpenden Child Contact Centre

Harpenden Child Contact Centre is a safe, friendly and neutral place where children from separated families can spend time with their parent who no longer lives at home with them (or sometimes other family members) and where problems have arisen in agreeing contact arrangements.

The Centre is well equipped with toys, games, art materials and facilities suitable for different age groups. HCCC makes no charge: refreshments are also offered free of charge.

HCCC is a registered charity and an accredited member of the National Association of Child Contact Centres.  It is run by a management committee of trustees and two co-ordinators, and is staffed by volunteers.  The Centre sessions take place at All Saints’ Church Hall in Station Road, Batford, Harpenden and is open on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

Visit Harpenden Contact Centre website for more information. The Final Word
Once again another academic year has gone by in a flash!  And the summer holidays await.  Hopefully you're all looking forward to a bit of rest and relaxation and some quality family time without the normal rushing around!

As always there is lots to keep everyone happy and entertained during the holidays.  Do have a look at our website throughout the summer as we have so much information there.  Our Things To Do section will inspire you for days out, our What's On page will help with those last minute, 'What shall we do today?' questions and our Holiday Clubs & Classes may well save you when you need a bit of space to breathe!

And just to really help you out this year here are our top picks for the summer which keep us local and are free, or very nearly free:
  • The Summer Reading Challenge this year has a Space theme. It blasted off on Saturday 13th July and is free to take part. Children can pop into Harpenden Library any time to register to take part. They have to try to read 6 books over the summer (they don’t have to be about space), return to the library to tell them about what they’ve read and collect stickers to add to their Space Chart. Collect all the stickers to complete the challenge and be entered into a prize draw to meet author Steve Cole!
  • Stockwood Discovery Centre's Interactive Science Exhibition is taking place from now until 8th September and tickets cost just £3.50. Described as fully interactive, innovative, fun, educational and entertaining, suiting adults, students, children and families of any age, it's definitely on our to do list this summer.
  • Classics on the Common is back on Wednesday 24th July.  Always a great afternoon and evening out for the whole family!
  • A few days later, don't forget Harpenden's Emergency Services Open Day. The event on Saturday, July 27th is being organised by the St Albans and Harpenden Volunteer Police Cadets and Harpenden Fire Station. A host of other organisations will be present on the day including ambulance services and emergency responders, Neighbourhood Watch and officers from the local police Safer Neighbourhood Team and Road Policing Unit. Throughout the day, visitors of all ages can watch safety demonstrations, get advice on a range of topics and look inside emergency service vehicles. A raffle will be held and a barbecue and refreshments will be on offer.
  • If the kids need to run off some steam Play in the Parks are free play activities aimed at children aged 3 - 12 years old and take part in Parks across the district. (Children under the age of 8 can take part in the session but must be supervised by a parent/guardian at all times.)  Each week there will be lots of fun activities and workshops. No need to book, just turn up and register on the day!
  • For a little bit of Under 5's fun, come down and say hello to us at the annual Town Council Teddy Bear's Picnic in Lydekker Park on 7th August from 11am-2pm.  The park will be alive with Teddy Bears and their small owners, as they make the most of the sun and the free entertainment on offer. As part of the picnic Imajica Theatre Company will be performing their Hartley Bear's Picnic Adventure Show. Don't forget your teddy!
  • Finally, If you fancy trying a new sport head over to Dunstable Downs for their Summer of Sport 2019.  Running from 22nd July until 30th August you can see how many sports you can take part in. There will be football, cricket, archery, badminton and a 'Borrow Box' full of games - take your pick!
Happy summer holidays everyone!
