NEWS & EVENTS from LfS Scotland

Update from the Learning for Sustainability Scotland Steering Group

We have welcome sunshine, with real heat and a blue sky! The bees are busy and small clouds of hoverflies have appeared, with a high pitched buzzing around the flowers. But it seems too much to bear, and by the evening, the pressure of the heat has intensified, storm clouds are building and there is a release in dramatic thunderstorms. Heavy rain washes away the dust of the day, and we have seen lightning set the short darkness ablaze. This drama seems reflected in human activities; our young people continue to rise in clouds and pollinate ideas of change and our politicians create storms galore.

At LfS Scotland we have adopted a summer mode, attending gatherings and growing our projects for the academic year to come. In early July we attended the  UK and Ireland Regional Centres of Expertise in ESD event, hosted by RCE Cymru at Swansea University. There are plans for increased partnership and collaboration, read more about them here.

Global RCE is providing funding  for two of our Steering Group members to attend the European RCE meeting next month,  exploring Climate change, sustainable agriculture and food security. This will be a chance to share activies in Scotland, learn from others and  explore possibilities for European partnership and collaboration . Many of our members are working on some aspects of these themes, please send us your thoughts

You can now find detailed information about the partnership Connecting Classrooms programme for Scotland on our website. Can you help? We’re looking for ideas on the best way to spread the word about the exciting new #ConnectingClassrooms through Global Learning programme. Click here to tell us yours bit.ly/2R6yFfA and enter the prize draw. before it closes on 20th September. There are also still some spaces left on our  Making Connections through Learning for Sustainability online course for teachers, starting on 13th September.

Scottish Universities Insight Institute (SUII) is inviting collaboration with SDG Network Scotland members to develop calls for funding proposals that will support knowledge exchange (via workshops, seminars and other activities) relating to the
UN Sustainable Development Goals. This is a real opportunity to shape the funding call and inject , sign up to join a webinar on 6th August where you can hear and share ideas.

For those of you travelling, please bring back ideas and inspiration from afar. For those of you working, stay cool. Everyone, watch out for lightning strikes and remember that a storm can clear the air.

This month's photo comes to you from....

These pics are of a street children's project 14th birthday party in Cambodia, that Irene Megaw has been involved with. Irene stated " My husband first volunteered 13 years ago and introduced me 4 years ago to the amazing work they have achieved and we return annually to continue to support in any ways we can. This project is funded through donations globally, Scotland included.

15 years ago the older children were walking around Siem Reap begging from tourists. Now they are confident, educated (many university graduates and attendees too) and happy. Not only that the project has helped set up micro businesses for the parents too and has helped break the cycle of poverty that 150 children lived in."

Irene Megaw, The Royal High Primary School, Edinburgh
