Fear is the mind killer.

Where to eat this August

It’s a new month and Eater dropped its list of restaurants currently in the August limelight. Scroll through to find samplings of seafood, Burmese, pizza, Laotian, and Latin fare. This writer is particularly keen to check out Hanumanh, the newest venture from the mother-and-son Thip Khao team in Shaw.

DC's new digital magazine

Summerhouse is a new digital magazine covering all of DC's creative corners. The first issue will feature stories about R&B, queer clothing swaps, sideshow culture, tarot readers, and more – as long as it's funded on Kickstarter. Support the campaign by picking up one of Summerhouse's print zines, art prints, or other rewards

A hot summer forcing archives to close

A faulty HVAC system at the interim location of Washingtoniana, DCPL’s flagship archives collection, has forced the facility to close when the temperature exceeds 82 degrees--AKA all but five days since June. They’re installing a new system this week and have been monitoring the collections every day to identify any damage.

The New Yorker tote is not a good tote

You know the one: the ubiquitous and undeniably iconic tote, whose carrier maybe calls themselves a “sapiosexual” on Tinder. Everyone’s favorite tote with an Insta account got a long-overdue tongue-thrashing by Slate for its disappointing utility. (The 730DC Manifestote on the other hand—*chef’s kiss*.)

Variable-rate parking comes to downtown

1,000 spots in Penn Quarter and Chinatown will now have parking pricing based on demand. That means prices go up to $7/hour when they’re scarce, and as low as $1 when they’re not. (For comparison, Philly’s downtown is at $13.)

Undeterred by la migra

The documentary, screened at Emergency Community Arts Collective and organized by The Institute for Policy Studies, BYP100, Sanctuary DMV and others, surveys community resistance against CBP and ICE in the border town of Arivaca, Arizona. A panel discussion will follow after the screening. (6:30pm)

Superfine! Art Fair returns

Art: Cool. Buying art: Daunting—in terms of price and decisions. This art fair in its sophomore year aims to turn visitors into first-time collectors by making art approachable and affordable. (Or you can just go and look at the art like you would in a museum.) Early Bird tickets are 25% off right now. (Oct. 30-Nov. 3)

Reminders from the Weekly Scheduler

  • Poet Ocean Vuong will read from his debut novel at Solid State Books, exploring a mother-son relationship, race, class and masculinity. (7pm)

  • Insert some laughs / cringes into your Monday. This open mic night includes all the regular things, but - BUT - there’s another comic to interrupt and heckle the comics on stage. We don’t even know. (8pm)
