Vale Mark Godfrey

The Cottage School was saddened by the passing of Mark Godfrey last week. Mark was a member of our school community for 10 years while his daughter Freya and son Toby attended.

We knew Mark as an active, engaged and committed community member, whether it was swinging a sledgehammer in the renovations on the new cottage or running committee meetings in the role of President. Mark lead by example; he embodied what it is to be a community member and he modelled how you create community. He always had a smile on his face, an angle or a solution that just might work.  He was an innovator, a problem solver and a doer. His family’s legacy is part of what has made us what we are today.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Golden Handshakes

Jesse: for being a great friend to his classmates by looking after them when they are hurt, sharing equipment & helping to pack up.

Remi M: for working with the curiosity, interest and stamina of a scientist

Harrison C: for showing great curiosity & resilience on Environment Day

From Julie...

Recently we have welcomed several new families into our Cottage School community: Vedanth (Pre-Kinder) and his parents, Vivek and  Pallavi;  Sylvie (Kinder) and her parents, Marina and Scott; and Mehardeep (Year 1) and her parents, Gagandeep and Hemant. They have all settled in remarkably well. Gagan and Hemant have joined our fabulous nature strip family jobs team (see photo which unfortunately does not include Caroline) who generally work together out the front on Thursday afternoons. Please introduce yourselves and say hi to our new families when you see them around or at our Working Bee on September 7.

The year is flying by and soon it will be time to start the Kinder 2020 enrolment process. We will pass on information to current Pre-Kinder parents on September 2 and expect a full Kinder in 2020 as we currently have a full Pre-Kinder plus a waiting list for Kinder next year.  We will start the re-enrolment process for the rest of the school as soon as the budget and fees have been finalised in mid-September. At this stage we expect we might have maybe two vacancies in our Prep/Littlies class next year so please spread the word if you know of anyone looking for a spot here for a child born in 2014.

Parent/teacher discussions seem to be going well and thanks to all those parents passing on their appreciation to the teachers for how well the reports reflect their particular child. One of the many advantages of Cottage School is just how well understood and supported individual students are here.

From Kate

Bonjour à toutes et à tous!  A good day to all!

First we say BRAVO to the grade 6 students who participated in the concours Alliance française at the end of second term.  Each bravely recited a French poem to two listeners.  Eleven schools sent representatives and Raban’s recitation was considered the best so he received a book at the presentation evening and Henry and Nicholas will receive mention honorable certificates.

Meanwhile, lucky Harry and Sophie are enjoying being in Paris where they are using their French, especially to buy icecreams. Now how can the rest of us practise our French?  We have some more bilingual books in our library to share at home or you can ask to borrow some of my books with a pretty s’il vous plaît. There are more and more resources online that are useful, including languages online activities organised by the Victorian Education Department.  Then there are Youtube clips, which may need to be checked out by an adult first but there are many episodes of children’s programmes from France available, some with subtitles. Look for characters such as Tchoupi, Trotro l’âne, Petit ours brun or Barbapapa.

There are lots of fun songs that practise the basics like days of the week and colours and one of my favourite performers is Alain le Lait.  Many of the Biggies can sing along with substantial parts of the songs of the French group Kids United and for younger students Skye drew my attention to ABC iview’s gorgeous series of folk songs in French, called “My little songs”, complètement adorable!

Now, wearing my other hat...

Last term, having covered many different forms of verse, I asked students to invent a form of their own:  to develop a set of guidelines to follow and to give it a title.  As usual I tried this myself and it is not at all as straightforward as it sounds, my Katiesept still needs tweaking.

One of the most successful forms was a “Loom string” created by Akira.  Her rules are:
  • first line: adjective
  • second line:  adjective verb
  •  third line:  adjective noun verb
  • last line:  anything anything
  • and no word may be repeated.
So this term we have looked at examples of loom strings and each tried to write one, although Gabi was inspired to string several together. Some examples are in the sidebar.

Loom String Poems

"Moon" by Amia
lonely
bumpy gaze
cratered moon waiting
for visitors

"Depression"
by Remi

blue
dull waiting
crying dead
loved ... gone

"Tarkine" by Daisy
luscious
beautifully growing
fresh flowers sprouting
lush greenery

still
silently dying
quiet trees scream
calling "HELP!"

“The soccer match” by Gabi

tense
scared shivering
brave players warm-up
whistle shrieks

energised
hard shooting
leather ball spinning
into goal

refreshed
ready to play
local team returning
exhausted

tired legs
passing team-mate dribbling
pelts into net
CLAP CLAP
