THE MCPHERSON MEMO

With so much negativity coming out of Washington, D.C., the tragedies at our border, the melting glaciers, it sometimes feels very challenging to be optimistic. But we must all somehow find the ability to take the high road with a hopeful spirit. I’d love to hear your suggestions on how to stay positive. Is it going to the theater or watching movies or reading your favorite book or getting together with friends? Or taking action on the causes you care about most?

We’ll feature some of your top ideas in our next newsletter so we can all lift each other collectively -- thanks in advance for sharing!

ON OUR MINDS

Brought to you this week by (newly promoted!) account executive and (newly ordained!) wedding officiant, McKenna Gramoll.

“Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)”
Immigrant entrepreneurs have long been an important part of America’s economic success story. This year, the New American Economy research fund found that almost 45 percent of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children. “In fiscal year 2018, the 223 New American companies on the 2019 Fortune 500 list brought in $6.1 trillion in revenue. To put it in context, that figure is greater than the GDP of many developed countries—including Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom.”

A new kind of story.
The latest arrival on the burgeoning podcast scene? “Meditative Story”: part first-person narrative and part guided meditation, this new genre of podcast is designed to immediately transport and recharge listeners. Led by Arianna Huffington’s Thrive Global and client WaitWhat (well known for its Masters of Scale podcast and founded by former TED media executives Deron Triff and June Cohen), the 30-minute episodes “take mindfulness off the meditation cushion and into our wider lives.” Intrigued? Us too. Listen in to episode one.

Paris is burning. Greenland is melting.
Greenland’s melting ice sheet is just the latest in a series of historic blows contributing to rising sea levels. On the heels of Europe’s record-setting temperatures, we were heartened to see the auto industry reject lower environmental standards as part of the California Deal. Despite the deal’s warranted critiques, it’s another proof point in the power of corporate partnerships, political influence and financial foresight. In short, corporate sustainability has become “a solution-driven debate, rather than sitting on the sidelines.”

  • “If everyone in the U.S. spent $20 a month at a women-owned business, we’d drive nearly five billion dollars towards female-led companies monthly.” New client and wallet feminists, @JoinDough, are on a mission to direct more dollars to women business owners. They’re quickly becoming our go-to source for discovering new brands (and it doesn’t hurt that their content is so  Instagrammable).
