This week, we're talking... The new website is live! 🤓 | What are Raleigh's iconic dishes? 🍴 | A collaborative vision-setting event for Southeast Raleigh 📝 | Are scooters green? 🍃 | Enjoy restaurant week specials from Midtown to Downtown 🍾

Hi y'all.

It's been the longest, shortest four months.

Besides the first four months of my son's life, I can't think of another time that four months made such a difference in my life.

It was April 8 that I first announced my modern storytelling strategies company, Minerva Media Co., and Raleigh Convergence, the first vertical.

It might feel longer to me because I see this as a long-range effort, an iterative journey to create a sustainable local media company that connects people to the places we live and inspires action.

To be honest, sometimes I wish I was moving faster. I see where this can go and I want to be able to serve this community in those bigger and better ways that only come with time and added resources.

But I remember something that Liz Kelly, of Liz Kelly Pottery, said during the live interview at the Raleigh Convergence's first event, Women Making Raleigh. She talked about how important it is to set and then celebrate goals, to recognize the progress you've made.

One of Raleigh Convergence's goals was creating a website. And as of Friday, it's live! I'm excited about the possibilities it opens up for discoverability of the Raleigh Convergence and future content plans.

So today, I'm feeling grateful for progress -- and for all of you, who I'm building this to serve.

Thank you for saying yes to receiving these editions I compile each week, for giving me feedback as I tinker to create something that better serves our community, for sharing this with your friends and neighbors.

As always, my inbox is open for your ideas and comments as we build the future of the Raleigh Convergence together.

To the future,
Sarah Day

What are Raleigh's iconic dishes?

Does the list include a tomato sandwich? A BBQ sandwich, perhaps, but with what sauce? Or instead, steamed pork buns (Char Siu Bao)?

The Post & Courier in Charleston put together a list of iconic South Carolina foods (and drink) to see which presidential hopeful will try all 16 first.

On the list: Mustard-sauced BBQ, South Carolina shrimp, pimento cheeseburger, grits, chicken bog, fried fish, sweet tea, slaw dog, peach-based dessert, hash, Bojangles biscuit, lizard's thicket vegetable, boiled peanuts, roasted oysters, deviled eggs and tomato sandwich.

It got me thinking: What are Raleigh's iconic dishes? Considering our thriving and diverse food scene, what would be on an epic list of the best Raleigh dishes, and from where? Hit reply and send your replies to me and I'll share them in a future newsletter and on Instagram.

Why are the candidates in South Carolina? Well, many of the Democratic presidential candidates are in our southern state neighbors because South Carolina has one of the first primaries.

Our primary is scheduled for March 3, 2020, and the
Wake Co. Board of Elections just decided on the locations for people who want to cast their votes earlier.

JOIN A COLLABORATIVE SOUTHEAST RALEIGH PLANNING SESSION...
Two Raleighites are organizing an event for community members and stakeholders to map out a vision for Southeast Raleigh. Aaliyah Blaylock and Carmen Wimberley Cauthen, two longtime Raleigh residents, are organizing the Southeast Raleigh Community Engagement Strategy Session.

Here's what Carmen shared about the event: "We will hear a presentation from Jeanne Milliken Bonds of the Community Development branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. After a short Q&A session, the participants will work in a charrette type activity trying to figure out what the community wants to see as opposed to what developers want to put in place."

A charrette is a collaborative exercise to design solutions to a particular challenge. The event will be 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Tarboro Road Community Center, 121 N Tarboro St. Additional questions:  seraleighcommunityengagement@gmail.com.

ARE SCOOTERS THAT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?
Maybe, maybe not.
Business North Carolina's Daily Digest included a report on a study that evaluated the use of scooters like Lime, Bird and (soon) Gotcha. The newsletter reports that, over its lifetime, an electric scooter produces about half the amount of carbon dioxide as a car. And, people tend to use them in the place of environmentally healthier options, such a walking, biking or riding the bus.

WUNC's report on the NC State study says it's not from when the scooters are used, it's how the scooters are "produced, distributed and recharged." The study's co-author WUNC interviewed said a solution is to streamline the collection process and create longer lasting scooters.

SPEAKING OF SCOOTERS...
Anna Johnson at the News & Observer reports that Gotcha will roll out a small fleet of scooters in the coming months. ICYMI, Bird and Lime pulled out from Raleigh at the end of July. Anna also reports that Lime is staying at NC State.

PLUS...

ITB Insider reports Drive Shack's opening date will be Aug. 23.

Hopscotch announced its second wave of performers. Individual main stage tickets, in addition to day passes and weekend passes, are also on sale.

Gateway Block Party, previously scheduled for this weekend, is rescheduled to Oct. 5 because of organizers' safety concerns at the site. The event page has been updated and attendees notified.

Union Special opens its retail doors this weekend, starting at 2 p.m. Saturday (during the previously scheduled Gateway Block Party) until sell out and beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday.

The splash pad/interactive water feature little ones can play in at Moore Square is temporarily closed

Old Tuffy beer is here from New Belgium, the Colorado-based company who opened a brewery in Asheville. WRAL reports the New Belgium CEO called it a "real, long term partnership" with NC State.

RBG is coming to speak at Meredith. Ticket info to come soon.
