St. Mary's Episcopal Church

August 2, 2019

"God is in every person's life. ... You can—you must—try to seek God in every human life. Though someone's life be a land full of thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God."
—Pope Francis.

Opportunity for Education:
Conference - ROOTED IN JESUS: JAN. 21-24, 2020

"It’s time for the Episcopal Church to come together as disciples of Jesus and take a bold new step into the next decade. Let’s spend four days together, talking about discipleship, leadership, evangelism, formation, preaching, and much more—so we can go out and be the Body of Christ." Quote from:
https://rootedinjesus.church/

Bishop Hayashi thinks that 2-3 people attending  the conference "Rooted in Jesus" ( click here for more info ) from St. Mary's would be great. We are looking for people who would be willing to engage more deeply and devote themselves more fully to evangelism, leadership, formation, and stewardship in our congregation.

If you think one of these people might be you, please email the parishoffice@stmarysprovo.org. Scholarships are available.

“Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” ~ St. Teresa of Ávila

Guidance Prayer for New Ministry
Almighty God, giver of every good gift:
Look graciously on your Church,
and so guide the minds of those
who shall choose a rector for this parish,
that we may receive a faithful pastor,
who will care for your people
and equip us for our ministries;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

"Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year learning certificate program in theological education based upon small-group study and practice."
"The EfM program is preparation for the ministry to which we all are called. It is that vocation for which we pray at the end of the Eucharist: 'And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.'"

If you have any questions regarding the Community Garden, please contact:
Lon Young -
lonyoung1973@gmail.com
Attention Gardeners:
In honor of Squash & Zucchini Season, please harvest the ripe veggies from your plot. Many ripe vegetables, including large zucchinis, have been spotted. To (mis)quote John 4:35, "
I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the [garden boxes], for [some] are ripe for harvest."
Have a great week and happy harvesting!
How can those of us not participating in growing crops in the Community Garden help?
1) Composting:
You may notice that we've dedicated Box #9 for composting. Please feel free to dump in any plant-based scraps.
2 ) Donate crops from your home garden:
If you have a garden at home and would like to contribute to Food & Care Coalition, you may donate too!
Donating to Food and Care Coalition:
You can take donations to F&CC yourself during normal business hours (see below) or simply ask at fellowship hour if there's someone who can do a donation run for you.
Donation Hours:
Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Saturday 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Please deliver your donations at the east entrance past the gate. Deliveries are received anytime gate is open.
No amount is too small to contribute. They will weigh your donation and may hand you a receipt indicating the donation in terms of weight, which is simply there system. St. Mary's would like to keep track of our Community Garden's contribution over the growing season. Please TEXT  Lon at (385) 448-0678 with the weight, however small, after a donation is made. This is one way we show the Diocese that the grant funds they awarded us are continuing to be a positive force in the world.

At St. Mary’s, one of our core values is that “We care about the communities in which we live, and we seek, as individuals and as a congregation, to reach out to others carrying with us the good news of Jesus’ love for us.”
One of our outreach opportunities for service to the community is our relationship with the Food & Care Coalition, where we help feed the hungry among us. We’ve been involved in it for 30+ years, starting in our own Parish Hall kitchen.
Come and volunteer providing lunch to the clients of the Food & Care Coalition.
We can use help in serving food, greeting clients, handing out sack lunches, washing dishes, cleaning up, and engaging in friendly conversation with the clients. (Children under sixteen are welcome to greet guests with an accompanying adult.)
Contact Steve Nordstrom, Erik Heiney, or Stan King through the church office to sign up to help or for more information.
Going on In Our Community
You are invited!!!!
VIA de CRISTO is a Spanish phrase meaning “Way of Christ.” VIA de CRISTO (VdC) is a highly structured three day weekend designed to strengthen and renew the faith of Christian people and bring them to a new awareness of living in God’s grace. It is a combined effort of lay people and clergy toward renewal of the church. The movement originated as “Cursillo” in the later 1940’s in the Spanish Catholic church and moved to the United States in the late 1950’s.
VIA de CRISTO is the Lutheran expression of Cursillo beginning in 1972 with the help of the
Episcopal Cursillo.
Cursillo is based on the fundamentals of Christianity, concentrating on the person and teachings of Jesus Christ. The focus is not on VIA de CRISTO itself, but on the environment of the community of believers. The objective of the movement is to inspire, challenge and equip people for Christian action in their homes, churches and communities. A VdC weekend is three days in length, beginning on Thursday evening and ending the following Sunday evening. The
participants live, study, worship and commune together daily. Fourteen talks are given, nine by lay people and five by clergy. VIA de CRISTO gives those attending a living understanding of basic Christian truths. There is music and singing, food and fellowship, a time for laughter and for prayer. The weekend is intended for lay people from every walk of life, for pastors, for people who live strong and active lives in Christ, and also for those who seek to be renewed
and strengthened in their relationship with Christ and the people around them.
Weekend #71 will be held September 26 to 29 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sandy, Utah. This is a coed weekend with both men and women participating – yes they do have enough space for us to gather together but still have men and women sleep in separate areas of their facility. All you need to come with is your sleeping bag or blankets and pillow, change of clothes, pajamas, personal items and meds, a towel for showering and an open mind. The
recommended fee for the weekend is $100 to help cover the costs.
As rectora or lay-leader for this weekend I invite each of you to consider attending by setting aside three days for a date with the Lord. Utah VIA de CRISTO says when asked who should attend a VIA de CRISTO weekend:
Any Christian who would like to experience the love of God in a very unique manner.
Any Christian who believes their spiritual life may need strengthening.
Any Christian who may have questions about prayer, study and sharing their faith.
Any Christian who is will to dedicate their everyday lives to God in an on-going manner.
In other words: any Christian.
