Dear Lumen members and friends,

I’m sure you are all having a terrific summer, blessed with extra time with family and loved ones.  Lumen New Jersey had a fabulous get together on the shore and I know many others met together socially to grow in their faith and friendship.

As you know, we do not have Lumen circles and coaching in August and thus have no particular Lumen virtue of focus this month. For this reason, you will find no circle material in the newsletter as you normally would. Next month we will resume sending the circle material in this newsletter.

Keep enjoying the summer rest and extra time with the kids before they go back to school. Also, every month is a good month to renew your hearts in Christ through prayer and Lumen action. With no specific Lumen virtue this month, perhaps you can just focus on the virtue you most excel at or the one you most need to improve!

God bless,
Fr Mark Haydu, LC

Lumen National Summit 2019

Our current strong focus continues to be Lumen National Summit, to begin on Friday evening October 4th and conclude Sunday after lunch October 6th.  The event will take place at the University Club in midtown Manhattan.

The conference theme is “Keeping Our Youth Engaged with Faith.” Notable speakers will focus on this issue from different perspectives including Fr. David Marcotte, SJ, Head of Fordham Graduate Programs for Psychology. Fr. Bruce Wren, LC, who leads the Lumen Chicago Chapter and will be focusing on the crucial role of men in protecting the faith of families and Church.  Ben Sands, a well-known executive coach and consultant will be outlining a 5 step game plan to help us become  inspired Catholic leaders at home and work. Steve Auth will discuss his book “The Missionary on Wall Street” along with the secular reactions to date.

Dr. Jorge Valdes is our featured speaker on Sunday. At an early age, Dr. Jorge Valdes became a part of the Medellin Cartel as drug Lord and millionaire. He had women, yachts, private jets, mansions all over the world but was unhappy. While serving a prison sentence he had a major conversion, earned a Bachelors degree, a Masters from Wheaton College and Ph.D. in the NewTestament from Loyola University. He has spoken to US House of Representatives, the Pentagon, and as keynote speaker for the National Day of Prayer in Washington, DC.

Entertainment is scheduled during evening dinners and some free time on Saturday afternoon. Confessions will also be offered during the Saturday session. Your suggestions and comments from last year have been taken into consideration and believe we have put together a powerful and content rich program combined with social activities that should make this year’s conference a “not to miss” event.  Last year we had about 75 attendees and  hope to have 100 this year.

The online process to register is very quick and easy.  Please click on this link to do so. We have also included the brochure which can be download and printed or shared.

Please reserve your room at The University Club as soon as possible.  212-572-3415.  A special rate will be offered by mentioning “Lumen Group”.  Contact Paivi Eck (917-287-8074) with any questions or special requests.

Annual Father/Son Mission trip to Montana.
A special thanks to Mike Stabolepszy who organized this entire trip and to all the dads and sons who made this incredible mission trip another fulfilling and impactful experience.  The focus this year was on improving the grounds and putting up a new statue of the Sacred Heart at the local parish for Crow Nation, St. Dennis.  Fr. Michael, fathers and sons joined the parish for their annual picnic on Sunday after Mass and enjoyed a day of fly fishing on Big Horn River as well.

Steve Auth Addresses Napa Institute
Steve Auth recently attended the Napa Institute to discuss his new book “The Missionary of Wall Street.”  This organization was formed to help Catholic leaders face the challenges of a secular world - to continue the work of the Apostles and their successors, the Bishops, heeding Christ’s call for ongoing evangelization.

Lumen Chicago - Trip to Rome with Fr. Bruce Wren
A couple of the Chicago members were able to join Fr. Bruce Wren for an unforgettable trip to Rome in late June, early July.
