What's New at Grady This Year
OneGoal
The OneGoal program focuses on three pivotal transitional years from junior year of high school through the first year of college, working in close partnership with districts, high schools and postsecondary institutions. Teachers are equipped with a robust curriculum, training and coaching, and technology to guide a cohort of student fellows to achieve their greatest postsecondary aspirations. In junior and senior years of high school, student fellows work to define their personal visions of success, explore their identities, and uncover noncognitive skills and mindsets needed to enroll and persist in their chosen postsecondary pathways. During the third year, the OneGoal teacher leverages the trust they have built with student fellows to act as a virtual advisor, providing content and counseling to ensure they enroll in their second year of postsecondary education on-track to graduate. This year 27 juniors will join the first cohort of fellows at Grady High School. Mr Andrew Nichols and Mrs Kathy Cook will be the Grady teachers leading this initiative.
Expanding Perspectives: The African Diaspora in AP Seminar
Grady High School’s AP Seminar class is a pilot for the African Diaspora Curriculum as approved by the College Board and is supported by the African Diaspora Consortium Both Susan Salvesen and Mario Herrera serve as members of the consortium. A meeting of the Consortium Institute was held in Princeton, NJ this summer to formalize the pilot curriculum, with the flexibility given to meet individual school needs. The curriculum will serve as the theme for the first semester of AP Seminar as students hone writing, research and presentation skills necessary for the class. Students will then choose their areas of research from any chosen subject in the spring. Students should leave AP Seminar thinking and talking about the African Diaspora, should have a sense of possibilities for broader global identity, should be engaged in and stimulated by the historical and current role of the arts in communication, cultural engagement and community uplift, and realize how to make the African Diaspora relevant in the digital age. In addition, the program will involve the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History as well as partnering with a local university for purposes of lectures, resources and content-area expansion. We are currently discussing such a partnership with Emory University.
Increasing our teaching and learning effectiveness with Teacher Clarity/PLC+
With a .75 effect rate, teacher clarity has the potential to double student learning over the course of any given year according to John Hattie (2008). But what exactly is teacher learning and how is it different from what teachers are doing now?
Teacher clarity includes more than clear communication but also considers learning intentions, success criteria, and progression of ideas. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are groups of teachers in the same content area meeting regularly with the shared goal of cutting away all parts of instruction that do not support and encourage learning by all students at all levels. The minor shift in thinking of what should students be learning as opposed to what are teachers teaching in PLCs and teacher clarity through all phases of a lesson bring consistency to teachers and students with an outcome of more focused learning. Grady has been immersed in creating effective PLCs for the past 3 years and these new initiatives will take us to the next level based on where each PLC is currently operating. All Grady teachers are owning this initiative!
Atlanta Technical College & Georgia State College courses offered on Grady’s campus.
We’re excited to enter in a dual enrollment partnership with Atlanta Technical College and Georgia State University. Atlanta Tech’s program is called Early College Essentials and GSU’s on-site program is called CampusX. As one of the tenants in the college access initiative, the extension of dual enrollment opportunities shortens the gap between high school and post-secondary education; thus improving a student's ability to impact their standard of living in a positive manner. Keeping in step with the national trend, having such curriculum at the high school increases access for students who don't live near an institution of higher learning or who have transportation challenges. Although Atlanta Tech Early College Essentials program is academic, having two vastly different colleges represented on our campus is culturally enriching where pursuant of education beyond high school isn't just limited to the traditional four-year liberal arts or arts and science experience. Grady counselor, Mr Young is the point person for this initiative
A New Course this year! SEL Tools for College and Career Readiness: A Service-Learning Approach

Coach Patrick Johnson will be teaching this course.
Keeping eyes and ears on our student needs...Adding to our emotional health bag of tricks, strategies, support, and solutions...
Grady welcomes CHRIS180 to campus as our full time mental health provider. CHRIS180 is a well established Atlanta mental health support organization with a mission to heal children, strengthen families, and build community by providing our students, families, and teaching staff with high-quality, trauma informed behavioral health services and support systems. CHRIS is an acronym that stands for these core values: Creativity, Honor, Respect, Integrity, and Safety.
Grady staff will also receive ongoing training through the CHRIS Training Institute, with a focus on trauma-informed care. We chose CHRIS180 due to their holistic approach which enables children, youth and families to change the direction of their lives and become self-sufficient, contributing adults despite challenging circumstances. Chris180 professionals, Hunter Leachmon and Madison Koaster, will be on the Grady Campus every day working with students and families complementing the work of our school counseling staff and social worker.
