Support Fair Elections in NC

Saturday  August 10         1:00 - 2:00 pm

DEMONSTRATION for fair redistricting BEFORE the League of Women Voters redistricting forum.
Where: PUBLIC SIDEWALKS on Washington St. and 3rd Avenue IN FRONT OF HENDERSON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
When: Saturday, August 10
Time: 1:00-2:00

Tired of being kicked around by Mark Meadows, Chuck Edwards, and Mitch McConnell? They can do it because we don’t have competitive legislative districts in North Carolina or across the country.
The League and Common Cause need support for redistricting reform. There is also danger that some bills before the NC General Assembly will undermine reform efforts. (see notes on H 140 below)
Legislators Terry Van Duyn (Asheville) and Chuck Mc Grady will be at the League forum. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO SPEAK OUT! Let’s END PARTISAN GERRYMANDERING. We have to let our voices be heard in Raleigh.

(Background on H140)
H 140 looks like big political trouble. It calls for  a state constitutional amendment to fix gerrymandering, but there’s not much transparency or public input called for.
There are good requirements for drawing district plans, but a legislative rider allows the legislature, to vote them down and substitute their own maps. The governor has no veto power over redistricting bills, so Republicans would have final control of redistricting maps.
Referring to H 140, Jennifer Bremer of the state League of Women Voters writes, “If the legislators vote down the commission’s proposed maps, they can then amend them. This opens the door to the legislative leadership substituting its own map and voting it in – taking us right back to where we are now.”
Fortunately, a law suit, Common-Cause v Lewis, hit state courts July 15. The complaint alleges that partisan gerrymandering by Republican legislators violates North Carolina state constitution. If the N.C. Supreme court rules in favor of the plaintiffs Common Cause the court could send the maps back to the legislature to redraw the maps according to the court’s guidelines. Or the court draw the maps themselves like they did in Pennsylvania- a win for fair redistricting. We should not rush into a legislative/constitutional fix until the common Cause lawsuit runs its course.

As this fall's local political campaigns kick into high gear at the end of August, PAHC needs help creating, sending, and following up on press releases and other outbound notices.  You would be working with at least two others (Julia and Neil), so the work can be allocated according to your day-to-day availability.  We also have templates and a media database to make everything as easy as possible.  Please contact Julia, Neil, or Sissy for more details.
