CKAS Seeking Project Suggestions (& Leaders)
Got a bird conservation project in mind but don't know how to make it fly? We'd like to hear about it. CKAS is always looking for new projects aimed at helping local bird populations. We value fresh ideas and the people who care enough to step up to lead such efforts. For the last few years, CKAS has raised a little more money than we spend (this hasn't always been the case); consequently, we have some funds in reserve to support/finance efforts to provide nesting spaces, improve or create bird habitat, or educate people about the threats birds face and how to mitigate them—just about anything you can think of that might help birds in central Kentucky and beyond. But we need your ideas.

We like projects that help local species of concern, favoring either birds listed with a KDFWR Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) of 3 or lower, and/or birds with a NABCI Conservation Concern Score (CCS) of 12 or higher. Some bird species, like the Prothonotary Warbler (SGCN of 5 but a CCS of 14), are in decline largely due to nesting cavity competition and so are easy to help: merely design and place a good nesting box that prevents larger birds from using it. But helping other bird species is more problematic: Henslow's Sparrows (SGCN of 3 and a CCS of 14) are in decline largely due to loss of grassland habitat to development, a factor that's much more difficult to counteract. But we'll try anything. Bring us your ideas; together, let's help birds.

News from the National Audubon Convention
Over 600 Audubon members from across North America gathered in Milwaukee late last July for the 2019 National Audubon Convention. CKAS sent two representatives who brought back these bullets:
 • Native plants for native birds: don't fear "weeds."
 • Bird–building collision monitoring: easy to start and manage since Audubon provides chapters free access to GIS software.
 • Feather Friendly Window Treatments: willing to partner with local chapters and businesses to design and install bird protection films.
 • College Audubon chapters? Hint: UK, Transylvania, and EKU?
We'll have a full update at our next general meeting (October).

A Swift Night Out #1
August 11th, 6:30-9:00pm
Join CKAS as we descend upon Kentucky Native Cafe to watch Chimney Swifts descend into Michler's greenhouse chimney. In recent years, CKAS recorded as many as 600 birds dropping into this communal roost for the evening. How many will show up this year? Come have dinner and then help us count. If you've never seen 600+ birds tornado down into a chimney in just a half hour, this is your chance. The spectacle is truly a wonder. NOTE: Please RSVP by August 8th so we can let the restaurant know how many of us to expect.

Martin Roost Watch
August 17th, 8-9:30pm

As Purple Martins gather for Fall migration, they form large flocks which roost together every night. When the birds lift from the trees in the morning, they show up on radar maps like clouds radiating outward, as seen in the above graphic captured just this week. This image indicates the swift roost rising from Richmond, but central Kentucky's Doppler is actually located near Louisville, throwing the distances a little off; we suspect our local Purple Martins have again chosen to roost in the trees beside Riney B. Park near Nicholasville.

As in years past, CKAS plans to gather to watch the swift flock settle in for the night on the weekend of the anniversary of the signing of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Please join us. NOTE: Exact location depends on the whims of the martins, so watch for updates on the CKAS Facebook events page and web calendar closer to the date.
Your Kroger Plus card can helps you help CKAS and our local birds every time you shop. CKAS participates in Community Rewards. Just select Central Kentucky Audubon Society (Org. #65224) as your Reward Charity of choice. Doing so will NOT affect your fuel point savings, but will help CKAS increase its share of Kroger's quaerterly donations. We currently earn about $200 a year with this program; more families linking their Kroger Plus cards to our cause would greatly help us help birds. Check the bottom of your next Kroger receipt to make sure it says: "At your request we are donating to Central Kentucky Audubon Society."

What if you don't get Audubon Magazine? Then you're probably not an official member of the National Audubon Society. You don't need to be to get our newsletter or attend CKAS events; but if you join NAS for only $20 annually, it helps support CKAS. To do so, follow this link. Please use the menu to select "KY | Central Kentucky Audubon (J51)" as your local Chapter Designation, which will automatically return your first year's subscription fees directly to our chapter so we can do that much more to help local birds.
