Blurring the Line: Manuscripts in the Age of Print

Throughout the Middle Ages texts and images were disseminated primarily through handwritten and hand-drawn materials. In the 15th century, with the invention of new printing technologies, a revolution swept through Europe giving rise to a rich cross-fertilization between mechanical innovation and painterly tradition. Including both printed and illuminated masterpieces, this exhibition challenges the assumption that printed media immediately replaced the production of handmade books, revealing instead a convergence of technology and artistry during the Renaissance.

The exhibition "The Past is Present: Paintings and Prints by Harold L. Cohen" focuses on work by the artist created over the last 20 years. During World War II Cohen joined the Navy and served on a ship in the South Pacific. He found the racism and anti-Semitism on that ship so appalling that he wrote a letter to his senator from Pearl Harbor to complain about it. He said that the enemy was aboard the ship. After retiring from teaching for decades, Cohen focused on painting, printmaking and sculpture. The works included in the exhibition focus on the past and present atrocities committed by authoritarian regimes.

Amze Emmons: Pattern Drift

This exhibition surveys the last 15 years of Emmons’ powerful artistic exploration, technical experimentation and critical thinking about the role of print in contemporary society. A multi-disciplinary artist with a background in drawing and printmaking, Emmons' images evoke a sense of magical/minimal realism inspired by architectural illustration, comic books, cartoon language, information graphics, news footage, consumer packaging and instruction manuals. An exhibition publication will accompany the show and serve as a catalogue raisonné of the artist's oeuvre to date.

This presentation is the heart of the mOca Cleveland's 50th anniversary programming. "Sunrise" is a legacy exhibition designed to honor moCa’s founders in a highly personal way. For the exhibition, their daughters—Catherine Gund, Margaret Sundell, and Kathy, Nina and Lauren Talalay—have selected contemporary artworks that represent their mothers both personally and professionally, while speaking also to their vision, passion and life-long interests. The prints, drawings, paintings, videos and sculptures that will be included in "Sunrise" are by some of the 20th century’s most influential artists such as: Lynda Benglis, Merce Cunningham, Red Grooms, Roy Lichtenstein, Judy Pfaff, Andy Warhol, and Jackie Winsor.

Ongoing Exhibition: Tom Hammick
Deep North: Selected Prints by Tom Hammick 2004–2019

Glasgow Print Studio, Glasgow, Scotland
This exhibition serves as a mid-career retrospective of works in print by the artist Tom Hammick (b.1963). This is Hammick’s first solo presentation in Scotland and presents works spanning 15 years of his printmaking practice. In addition, the artist is producing a suite of new prints in collaboration with Glasgow Print Studio Master Printmakers, to be launched at a later date. Stage proofs from this suite are included as part of the exhibition. Hammick's imaginative and emotional exploration into the human condition explores questions about place and transience and asks questions as much about home, where we belong, and how the ideas of a connection to place conjure up aspects of who we are and how we live.
