NextGen at the 68th Annual SES Conference
from Muhammad Ali, SES Board Council Director

SES hosted a dynamic workshop focusing on the future of standards and the Next Generation standardization professionals. Here are the key takeaways from each workshop Session:

Session one included two interactive panels; the first was focused on 'Standardization Education Initiatives' and included discussion of ways to better engage academia and use digital collaboration to maximize participation. There were examples of outreach to young professionals, importance of proper on-boarding and training, and working effectively within multi-disciplinary standard committees. The second panel was focused on rethinking the Standards Development Process in Digital Age discussed major topics such as stakeholder engagement, ways to reduce standard development timelines, and improving the experience of end users for consumption of information.

The other two sessions were facilitated by expert SES member leaders and included an interactive discussion of the current set of skills and credentials needed in standards development professionals and an exploration of future needs for standards professionals and organizations, current resources available such as SES offerings, and ways to improve them or offer new products/services.

SES National Capital Area Section Summer Event
SES Goes to Watergate

The National Capital Area Section of SES enjoyed a delightful Happy Hour Event on Thursday 25 July at The Top of the Gate, the rooftop bar at the Watergate Hotel.  The views overlooking Georgetown, Rosslyn, and Roosevelt Island were delightful, not to mention a scenic sunset over the Potomac.  Even though no one broke into any offices and no one was impeached or indicted, it was one of the most memorable evenings ever at that august establishment.  With delightful drinks, sumptuous hors d’oeuvres, and the professional and humorous banter which all standards professionals excel at, the evening was a true delight!  (Fun Fact: Why should no one be surprised that Richard Milhous Nixon had his undoing start there?  Simple: Every millhouse must have its watergate!)

We hope to continue building professional relationships, raising awareness about standards, and providing a venue for all to come and relax with friends. We strive to have three events per year taking place in the Spring, Summer and Fall. Our next National Capital Area Section event will take place the evening of Tuesday, November 5th in downtown Washington, DC. To stay informed with upcoming event details and invitations, please contact Logen Johnson at logen.johnson@sae.org to request to join the SES National Capital Area Section.

SES Standards Engineering

The feature article for the July/August issue of Standards Engineering explores the very first standardization efforts, dating back to 3000 BCE in the Middle East. It is also an opportunity to highlight the Harappan civilization in what is now Pakistan and India, which at the time was larger than Egypt and Mesopotamia and their equal in development.

We also have a Q&A with our incoming president Mili Washington; a book review with a list of other references that should be part of the library of any standards professional; the results of the 2019 SES elections; and information about this year’s recipients of the SES scholarships.

If you are an SES Member, log into the SES portal to open your free copy, to review and purchase a copy of Standards Engineering, visit the SES Shop.
