Southfield Cable Covers Families in Bloom
City Cable 15 Shares the Story with Our Community

We would like to share a video that was produced about Spaulding for Children, just after our Families in Bloom event in April.  Thank you to Southfield Cable and the team from their community news and events program, City Cable 15 . You have preserved not only the occasion, but provided a most memorable story that tells why we do what we do every day.

Connecting People, Ideas & Communities
Spaulding Board Member Verna S. Green

A longtime and active member of the Spaulding for Children Board of Directors, Verna S. Green is the driving force behind Families in Bloom. The community focused event was held in April at St. John's Banquet & Conference Center in Southfield. Ms. Green recently started preparing for next year’s event, tentatively scheduled for Mother's Day weekend to honor all mothers. Among her goals for Families in Bloom II is for the event to spread awareness of Spaulding for Children and our work in the City of Detroit and throughout the metropolitan area.

While she seldom talks about her own accomplishments, we think you' like to know more about Ms. Green:

Her eyes reflect the kindness of a grandmother. With her vision, Verna S. Green focuses on success like a CEO.

The former Senior Vice President and General Manager of Detroit radio giant WJLB FM 98 and sister station WMXD 92.3 FM, Ms. Green also is recognized by Michigan’s business community as the first President and CEO of the Detroit Black Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Green started her career in the mailroom of Parke, Davis & Company, the pioneering Detroit based pharmaceutical giant. She later joined General Motors Corporation’s Corporate Identity Department, helping administer the standardization of signage throughout the various dealerships and other operating units of the corporation. She was later promoted to GM’s Organizational Development & Research Department.

Summer is a great time to explore your library!

A Message from the Southfield Public Library

Did you know the Southfield Public Library is here to help you succeed?

Our goal is to help everyone in the community.  We want to help you learn, explore, relax, grow your business and mind.  We can help you in a number of ways:
  • Come to the library: Our library is large and has a place for you.  We have quiet study spaces, group meeting rooms, computer labs and wi-fi throughout the building.  Bring your covered drinks with you and have coffee by the fireplace, tea on our terrace or bring your water into our Southfield History Room.  Kids can explore our sit in the book throne in our Storybook Castle and meet our library dragon, Slumber. They can also meet the Cat in the Hat and see Dr. Seuss’ prints, sculptures and books.
  • Take items home: We have around 250,000 items for you to check out.  Books, audio books, CDs, DVDs, graphic novels are yours to check out with your library card.  We can help you learn to read, solve a murder mystery, travel to other planets, research a new career, study for a test and far more.  If we do not have the item you are looking for we will help you find it as libraries throughout the state work together to get you what you want.
  • Great programs: Want to do more than just read about interesting things?  Come to our programs for them to be brought to life.  We have story times, puppet shows and coding classes for children.  Music programs including our monthly Jazz and Blues @ Your Library concerts for all ages.  For adults we have author visits, health presentations, book discussions and far more.

The Southfield Public Library is located at 26300 Evergreen Road in Southfield.  Call (248) 796-4200 or visit at www.southfieldlibrary.org .

Sharing Summer Fun - Plus Ice Cream!

Thank you to staff and volunteers who helped make the Spaulding Ice Cream Social a big hit for children and families. Each year, our families look forward to spending the day enjoying summertime fun and meeting new and old friends.

This year, more than 40 families attended the event and enjoyed the water park and a great lunch, followed by ice cream. Providing networking opportunities for our families is an essential way to provide them support. There is nothing like meeting and talking to other families in order to share parenting strategies and resources.

Also special thanks to the sponsors and donors, including those who donated online through the Facebook campaign. Every donation helps Spaulding treat our families like family!

SFC Staff Profile
Kelly Burdell, Foster Care and Adoption Supervisor

“When I first started, I saw that everyone here holds compassion for everyone else," Ms. Kelly Burdell said. "They are always willing to help out, doing different things – for each other and for those we serve. And that includes the most important thing we do: Finding permanent home for children.”

Kelly Burdell had long known that children in Michigan and across the United States are in desperate need. And, so, she decided to dedicate her professional career to help them find safe, healthy and supporting homes as a practitioner of social work.

Ms. Burdell began her service with Spaulding for Children as an intern in 2012. The assignment was part of her Master of Social Work studies at Wayne State University. Upon graduation in 2013, Spaulding hired Ms. Burdell as a Foster Care Specialist, helping children and families find each other. In 2016, she became Spaulding’s Foster Care and Adoption Supervisor. Recently, she spoke with us about her work.
