Renowned Kinesiology scholar Daniel Gould was named the inaugural Gwendolyn Norrell Professor of Youth Sport & Student-Athlete Well-Being. Gould is a professor and director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports.

POETIC ACHIEVEMENT: Associate Professor Laura Apol is the second-ever individual to be named Lansing-area Poet Laureate. In her appointment, she will promote poetry, expand access to literary arts and more.

Barbara Schneider, renowned sociologist and education scholar, edited the "Handbook of the Sociology of Education in the 21st Century" (Springer, 2018). It delves deeply into current issues in the field, including educational access and opportunity in populations of students who have long been overlooked.

COLLABORATION + MENTAL HEALTH: There needs to be more emphasis on collaboration across home, school and physician offices when administering medications to treat mental health problems in students, says book co-edited by Professor John S. Carlson.
How do students tackle topics like immigration, privacy in the classroom?
Research from MSU scholars examines how students discuss issues like immigration, internet privacy and "fake news" in the classroom. Plus, read tips for educators on tackling these tough topics with students.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND EDUCATION: Scholars are exploring ways in which social media and education connect, including implications for the future, why and how teachers are using social media platforms and more. 
GIVING BACK: John "Jack" and Sharon Schwille, notable leaders from the MSU College of Education, have established a professorship rooted in international research and teacher education.

Two new, and fully online programs in the college will help ensure K-12 students who may need additional support "don't fall through the cracks." Applications are now open for the graduate certificate and the master's program in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
