DUG Network
August Urban Gardener Newsletter

Hello Gardeners!

If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time welcome!

We recently partnered with the amazing folks who manage Rooting DC, DC's Annual Urban Ag Festival, to increase the number of people receiving this free, solicitation-free, all volunteer managed, newsletter.

Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement.  Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.

Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first.   The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area.

We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation).  We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox.  Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

Check Out The DUG Network Resource Website

DUG Network also has an amazing website promoting over 500 different urban Ag, food security and environmental organizations and resources operating in the greater DC area.

Need Help Promoting an Event or Resource?

If you know of any garden, food and environmental events or opportunities that the community should know about, please email us the details (you can just respond to this e-mail) to include in the next newsletter.

Need Help Bringing this Newsletter Beyond the Computer

In addition, we need your help to bring awareness to all these amazing resources to all people in DC regardless if they have access to a computer or not.  We're looking for people or organizations that can help us print and post this newsletter so people without regular computer access can see these reources.  If you can help us print this newsletter and post it in any public place( libraries, community centers, coffee shops, barber shops, etc) please let us know.

Webinar: Amplifying the leadership of People of Color and Indigenous Communities in sustainable food systems organizations
Wed, Jul 31, 2019 2:00 PM - 3:15 PM
The purpose of this webinar is to elevate the important work of sustainable food systems (SFS) organizations in the US, specifically those led by people of color and Indigenous communities, and to answer common questions on ways to identify and support these efforts. For decades the significance of this work within communities across America has been overlooked and marginalized, with little or no consistent funding streams to support and sustain these programs. This rings true for even the most developed efforts doing work in this space, and it’s a harsh reality for those organizations led by people of color and Indigenous communities seeking to procure funding for their programs. According to a 2016 report from the D5 Coalition, only 6.9% of all grants go toward communities of color, and when further broken down into specific issue-related categories like SFS, the numbers are even more depressing. The ultimate goal of this newly released SFS resource guide is to help grantmakers better understand the SFS landscape and the organizations within it that are led by people of color and Indigenous communities. With this guide, funders and other investors in this sector will be better equipped with knowledge about these organizations that can inform and advance their internal grantmaking practices.

Racist War on Drugs: August 13th of the Month Event
Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Function Coworking Community
4709 Harford Rd, Baltimore, Maryland 21214

Come out and join us in a discussion on how ending the racist 'war on drugs' is necessary in ending police violence, mass criminalization, and overdose. Drug prohibition and related policies specifically target Black people and other people of color, and continue to have damaging effects that compound with each generation. Engaging in the work to chip away at and end these policies necessitates understanding their history. In this interactive discussion-based event, we'll explore some of this history in order to share how we will continue to work towards a safer and more just future. This event is a collaboration between BRJA and Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition

Ibram X. Kendi | HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST
Friday, August 16, 2019 at 7 PM – 8 PM
Sidwell Friends School
3825 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington, District of Columbia 20016
Politics and Prose is thrilled to host this event for Ibram X. Kendi for his new book, How To Be An Antiracist. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. In How to Be an Antiracist, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it.

October Urban Agriculture Month Kickoff Event & Social Hour
Thursday, October 3 from 5:30pm – 8:00pm
Join Arlington Friends of Urban Agriculture at Barley Mac in Rosslyn for food and refreshments, and to learn how we can accelerate urban agriculture initiatives in Arlington. Special guest speaker Wythe Marschall, a national expert in vertical and indoor farming, will lead a discussion on how we can transplant best practices from New York City and European cities to grow a sustainable, just and secure food system in Arlington. Many people believe that cities, not nations, must lead the way in greening the built world. Wythe will talk about how different public and private institutions can intervene to build a resilient future that includes producing food in an urban setting. This is a timely discussion for Arlingtonians given Amazon’s imminent social and physical transformation of Crystal City, the region’s commercial and mixed-residential building boom, and the County’s renewed commitment to environmental stewardship.

DC’s First Food Runner Program "Food Rescue US"
One of the biggest barriers to donating food is transportation. Food Rescue, a national food rescue platform, is a FREE food runner app that coordinates volunteers to help transport food that would normally be thrown away (40% of all food ends of in the dump!) from a donor (restaurant, grocery, caterer, farmers market, event, etc.) to a place that feeds people in need. Food Rescue US is looking for volunteers, food donors, receiving organizations, and anyone who wants to lend a helping hand. Please email Kate Urbank, the DC Site Director, at kate@foodrescue.us with any ideas or questions and sign up at www.foodrescue.us to volunteer or receive more information
