We are excited to share our news in July! The biggest new of all is the launch of our new member call – please help us reach excellent early-career researchers around the world and encourage them to apply. The other big event for us this month is the 4th Worldwide Meeting of National Young Academies in Da Nang, Vietnam, which will probably have kicked off by the time you receive this newsletter – we are proud to co-organise it with the Vietnam Young Academy, and look forward to the outcomes of this meeting of diverse scientific minds from across the globe!
As usual we are also happy to share news about our members and alumni flying the GYA flag high, as well as our recent contributions to the gobal science and policy landscape.

The GYA’s 2020 Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists on the topic ‘Heal the Earth’ will take place from 8-12 June 2020 in India. The meeting’s proposed location is Bangalore, India.
GYA co-organising the Worldwide Meeting of Young Academies
Representatives from more than 30 young academies from all over the globe are meeting for the Fourth Worldwide Meeting of Young Academies this week in Da Nang, Vietnam. The theme "Young Academies for Promoting Peaceful and Inclusive Societies” will be explored from 31 July - 2 August 2019. One of the main outcomes of this meeting is a draft set of principles by which National Young Academies around the world agree to be organised around, and about which consultations are ongoing. The meeting is hosted by the Vietnam Young Academy (VYA) and co-organised by the GYA. Read more here.
GloSYS champions to present findings at World Economic Forum
The GloSYS Africa champions will run a World Economic Forum affiliates session on 6 September 2019 in Cape Town, South Africa. The goal of their session is to launch the Africa project's final report and engage a range of stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to the barriers identified in the GloSYS Africa research that young African researchers have in reaching their potential.
Help spread the word - applications being accepted for the World Science Forum Science Leadership Workshop
The GYA and the InterAcademy Partnership are co-organising a pre-World Science Forum Science Leadership Workshop for early-career scientists from 19-20 November 2019. Application deadline is 18 August 2019. Details, financial support information and the applicaion form are available here.
GYA Co-Chair Koen Vermeir (France) participated in a meeting of a subcommittee of the Open Science Policy Platform of the European Commission (OSPP) in Brussels on 17 July 2019. Meeting participants worked on a new framework on incentives and indicators of Open Science, with Koen representing the GYA’s stance on these issues. The group produced a draft document that sets out concrete procedures for commitments to practical implementations around Open Science.
Marian Asantewah Nkansah (Ghana) and Mirabbos Hojamberdiev (Uzbekistan) were chosen among outstanding young chemists from different parts of the world based on their scientific achievements in chemistry to represent “NEODYMIUM” and “MOLYBDENUM” in the International Younger Chemists Network’s Periodic Table of Younger Chemists. Cristina Blanco Sío-López (Spain) has been awarded with an EU Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship. Cristina was also selected as a 2019 Oxford Centre for Economic and Social History Invited Lecturer at St Hilda's College, University of Oxford.
Velia Siciliano (Italy) has been recognised as one of the top 10 scientists under 40 in Italy. More information here.
Abhi Veerakumarasivam (Malaysia) and Renard Siew (Malaysia) have been included in the Asia Tatler’s list of young leaders shaping Asia’s future. Their respective profiles appear here and here.
The Chilean Academy of Sciences recognised Fernando Valiente (Chile) as an outstanding scientist. More information (in Spanish) is available here.
German Young Academy: call for joint YoungAcademies@ project
The German Young Academy – Die Junge Akademie – will celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2020. To mark the occasion, they invite young academies the world over to join them in a global initiative to further the dialogue between researchers and other members of our young academy communities. The initiative is called YoungAcademies@, indicating that members of young academies will speak at different places than the ones typical for academia, thereby reaching people that are not directly in touch with research, which may be more important than ever in a time of growing skepticism and “alternative facts”.
YoungAcademies@ will be a project that can take many forms, from a talk at your favorite museum to a scientific consulting booth at your local market or a 5-minute elevator/train/ferry pitch on what your work looks like. The German Young Academy will offer an online platform where all individual events can be listed and documented. The organisation of the event would be done locally by members of young academies.

Upcoming events
Tsukuba Conference, Tsukuba, Japan, 2-4 October 2019
The GYA, together with the Young Academy of Japan, is organising a panel at the Tsukuba Conference on the topic of "Citizen Science". GYA EC member Yoko Shimpuku (Japan) is a member of the programme organising committee.
Representatives from the GYA/National Young Academies/initiatives from the G7 countries will be invited to discuss Citizen Science as well as the UN SDGs with respect to the Science20 discussion of marine plastic waste. The Conference aims to be the "Davos" for young global leaders, including scientists, policy-makers, and industries. More information is available on the GYA Events page here.
The GYA, represented by Connie Nshemereirwe (Uganda) is co-organising the Connecting Minds Africa Conference from 25-27 September 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The GYA, its members, leadership and Office will be involved in various events and sessions at the World Science Forum (WSF) in Budapest in November 2019. For example, along with the InterAcademy Partnership, the GYA is co-organising a Science Leadership Workshop for early-career researchers prior to the WSF, from 19-20 November. Also, as a member of the WSF Steering Committee, the GYA is involved in the selection of early-career researchers as presenters for every main session. See here for details.
