When Tom Rost of R.G & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes received a letter from a longtime employee, he immediately knew there would be a serious impact on the family-owned funeral home his grandfather started in 1910. What followed is a story of government overreach, courts rewriting the law, and pursuit from the ACLU. The case arose when a male employee announced his intent to dress as a woman while working with grieving families, provoking a legal battle that will be argued in the U.S. Supreme Court this October. At the heart of the matter is whether "sex" should be redefined to mean "gender identity" in federal law. As ADF Vice President of Appellate Advocacy John Bursch writes, the case also calls into question whether Americans like Tom Rost can rely on what the law says.

Is religious liberty under threat in the United States? According to David French of National Review the answer is "yes." Writing at the Wall Street Journal, French looks at watershed moments in American history—including the 2015 Obergefell decision on same-sex marriage—to demonstrate how religious liberty has come under attack even in a nation that specifically protects it. As French points out, common myths about religious liberty have seeped into the American conscience, resulting in the erosion of a freedom guaranteed under the First Amendment.

A Minnesota mother is appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court, asking it to review a case in which county officials did an end run around her parental authority, so that her son—who believes himself to be a female—could get body- and life-altering drugs and surgery. Anmarie Calgaro says that local school and health officials declared her then 15-year-old son emancipated to justify usurping her parental rights. In her lawsuit, Calgaro argues that her due process rights were violated since Minnesota law did not provide her a way to fight the supposed emancipation of her son. Calgaro's attorneys called this situation, "A parent's worst nightmare."

The firing of former Planned Parenthood president Leana Wen all but proved what pro-lifers have said for years: Abortion at all costs. While the abortion giant used to claim abortion was a small part of its business, a recent op-ed penned by Wen says that she was fired for failing to advocate sufficiently for abortion. As Nicole Russell writes at The Washington Examiner, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to Planned Parenthood throughout its 100-year history.
