“Operation Move-out” began at 8 AM on Wednesday and will run through 5 PM on Monday. Tenants are asked to place trash items at the curb by 7 AM for same-day pickup. Crews will operate daily, with the exception of Sunday. The annual initiative was developed to manage the removal of trash and discarded household goods as college renters move out of rental properties downtown.

Mayor Tecklenburg stopped by The Citadel to visit with a group of 8th-12th grade girls who were selected to participate in the National Security Agency and National Science Foundation funded five-day cybersecurity camp. Eastside Garden Club's "Yard o' Month" for August

Call her the Mayor of Blake Street! 30 years ago, Mary Edwards bought a vacant 1858 house that had been damaged by fire. Today, the home has been transformed. So has Blake Street itself, and no one has had a bigger hand in that than the Mayor of Blake Street. Mary’s front-drive and porch are awash in brilliant orange canna lilies, Boston ferns and more.

Her back garden is chockablock with cacti and banana trees that she gives away to friends. Across the street, she and her part-time gardener, Wiggy Vanderhorst, maintain a headstone to World War I veteran Henry Smalls, covered in a cascade of beautiful flowers. “It is just an honor, period,” she says. “There are a lot of veterans in the community.”
She also picks up litter every morning. “That is the way we were raised,” says Mary, who at 70 is thin, cheerful and elegant in her straw hat. “Keep things clean, close the gate, take care of your neighbors. Mary grew up on Reid Street and spent 30 years as a counselor at Trident Tech. Please email to nominate your neighbors from Mary to Stuart Streets.
