Around The House...
Summer means fruits and vegetables often eaten raw... Stone fruit, salads, cherries, apples, berries, and more deserve to be savored and eaten clean. This "around the house" discovery started with my friend, Michelle, suggesting the use of baking soda to clean produce. I did some more digging and found she is right. There is a lot of evidence to support soaking your fruits and veggies to remove pesticides in this white-kitchen-helper also known as inexpensive, natural baking soda.
In this video, Dr. Alan Mandell, suggests 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 2 cups of water. It's probably not an exact science so I just put in a scoop into a bowl of cold water, stir it and add the produce. Do this while you are prepping other food as it takes about 15 minutes, then rinse well and serve. This tip works, and I swear the food tastes better for it!

Binge Watching...
In keeping with our red, white, and blue theme of this newsletter, there is no better show On Demand than Patriot that deals with being an American spy. Not only is there a strong human interest plot, but the main character is flawed at his job in ways that are natural and make a lot of sense. A person in any type of job has a learning curve and human issues that effect their objectives. This series does an interesting job of combining these issues within the espionage game at the highest levels. Tip: Stay with it, it starts out a bit slow, but there are really clever and nail-biting situations that we as the viewer get to be a part of.
This original series is developed by and only available on Amazon Prime, if you haven't yet joined you can use this link for a free 30 day trial.

In The Library...
Wow! Have I got a book for you!! Red Sparrow will carry you to places most will never see or know, and in this story, that is a good thing. The book was made into a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence, but I haven't, and probably won't watch it until I've read the entire trilogy. This is book number one, and it is worth a look if it got by you when it was published in 2014.
Filled with American vs. Russian clandestine operations and competition... You will not be disappointed. The author, Jason Matthews, a retired CIA operations director, develops a plot line that takes us behind the scenes of what goes on at the top and inside the world of national security and secrets.

On The Plate...
July is National Blueberry Month!! Not only are blueberries good for your memory, they are great in cereal, muffins, spa water, salads, pies, pastries, jams, and smoothies! This little blue fruit packs a punch of flavor however it's used, eaten cooked or fresh.
Note: National Blueberry Pie Day is officially April 28, but my EASY Blueberry Pie Recipe is simple and delicious any time of year.
