AUGUST NEWS

RASN Turns 1

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since RASN was first announced, and equally amazing how much each of the RASN Providers has achieved in this short period of time. While some of the Providers were able to hit the ground running with established teams and operations, others started from scratch.

As we’ve shared in previous newsletters, there has been a fantastic range of arts initiatives kickstarted through RASN over the first year, including thousands of consultations, industry networking sessions, capacity building workshops, and mentorships, a major wearable art project, community engaged performances, First Nations gatherings, and the development of major cross-regional initiatives including art trails that will stretch across Western and Far North Queensland.

As we look toward the second year of RASN, we are excited by the growing evidence of collaboration between RASN regions, as we work together to build strategic initiatives that maximise impact. In the coming months, Arts Ablaze will see all RASN Providers come together, for a regional arts program that truly reflects our diverse regions. Over the coming year we will also be exploring how we can work together to address some of the persistent challenges affecting the arts in regional areas as a network, as well as developing more great cross-regional projects.

Congratulations to all RASN Providers on a stellar first year. We can’t wait to see what the next one has in store!

Bark Shield

Over the last few months, the RASN SCO team at Queensland Music Festival started to talk about ways to share messages of hope and healing, and how to invite people to share their thoughts and feelings, beyond the opportunity to sing as part of Help is on its Way. The idea of inviting members of the community to share a message that would become part of something greater was born.

We were inspired by the tradition of the Wish Tree that exists in many cultures throughout the world, such as Tanabata Festival in Japan, the practice of Clootie Wells in Scotland, and Yoko Ono’s international Wish Tree project that has been ongoing since 1981 in countries including Finland, Argentina, Italy, France, Ireland, England, and the United States.

Our Wish Tree is called Bark Shield, recalling how trees can protect us and signify our identity.

Between 19 – 23 July, our team followed the Help is on its Way Flying Tour by road – alongside the Royal Flying Doctor Service Drought Wellbeing Team – to the four communities on the tour that have been severely impacted by drought over many years.  We gathered messages along the way from Barcaldine, Hughenden, Birdsville and Cunnamulla, with a promise that they would be shared at the event in Brisbane.

In the course of our road trip, we encountered many of the conditions that Queenslanders living in outback communities deal with every day, including extremely variable mobile reception and internet access, road conditions that tested even our trusty Hilux 4WD, and freight companies that take more than twice as long to deliver to outback towns than the service guarantee (we had to make do with a Christmas tree in Cunnamulla after our shipment went missing for several days).

But we also encountered the incredible people and landscapes of Western Queensland. A Mayor in Hughenden who not only officiated the Help is on its Way event, but also sang in the choir and helped to stack tables and chairs after the crowd went home. A local Councillor in Barcaldine who is also a well-known sculptor that goes by the name of Scrapmetalsheila. A helicopter pilot who managed to sneak in an early morning flight over Windorah so we could truly see the beauty and wonder of the area.

Above all, everywhere we went, we met people willing to help out, from sharing local knowledge on things like how to track down the local TOLL delivery driver to find your lost package, or the best pub to visit in the next town, to the proper way to secure a ratchet strap. We also met many travellers from Victoria and points beyond who spend their winters here exploring the riches of our outback towns, motivated by the desire to help communities out with their tourist dollars.

More than anything, community members from out west shared the message that they would love it if more people from Brisbane would come to experience Western Queensland for themselves, to learn that there is more to their story than what you might see on the news.

We have been tremendously privileged to be part of this project and hope to continue it into the future.

NAFA Fringe Festival

NQ RASN has been very busy this month with the North Australian Festival of Arts and the Northern Fringe Festival. RASN joined the team from Sonic Alliance to present a 3 day multi artform event at the Old Courthouse and the adjoining Perfume Gardens. Over 70 local artists and performers came together to create a unique space showcasing Townsville’s best DIY and performing artists.

We’ve been everywhere man; Palm Island has been a focal point with RASN collaborating on a number of projects including NAIDOC Week, Mission Songs and with the local council and not for profit organisations the Townsville Folk and Acoustic Club and Full Throttle Theatre Company.

In mid-July we hosted youth from across the region in Charters Towers for the Isaiah Firebrace concert. Then we headed out to Hughenden twice to help out with the Queensland Music Festival Help is on its Way concert choir and the Hughenden Country Music Festival. Then it was back to Townsville to hear an amazing group of Emergency Services singers who performed with Glenn Shorrock for the the final Help is on its Way concert.

From DIY home-recording techniques to building your online presence, BEMAC’s EMERGE Series creates inroads for emerging musicians to take their music to a broader audience.

A $31 million art gallery in the regional Queensland city of Rockhampton, designed by Conrad Gargett in conjunction with Clare Design and Brian Hooper Architect, has received funding from the federal government. The gallery project received $10 million – the maximum possible allocation – in the third round of funding from the government’s $641.6 million Building Better Regions fund, which is administered by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. The funding will trigger the release of $8 million pledged to the project by the state government. Rockhampton Regional Council endorsed plans for the museum in March 2018. The design calls for a three-storey structure with around 4,700 square metres of floor space, containing a number of double-height exhibition spaces, as well as retail, cafe, administration and flexible multipurpose spaces.
Recipients Announced for Small Schools Fund 2019

Flying Arts Alliance is proud to announce the successful applicants for the 2019 round of the Small Schools Fund.

The Small Schools Fund allows schools with 50 or less students in regional and remote Queensland to apply for up to $5000 per year for curriculum linked projects.

The annual funding opportunity allows schools to work collaboratively with an experienced artist to plan and deliver a visual arts incursion of their choice.

By combining multiple elements of the Australian School Curriculum the school and resident artist can work together to create arts rich experiences for their students and the wider school community.

Thanks to the incredibly successful Make Art Big in Small Schools campaign in conjunction with successful Creative Partnerships Plus 1 funding and generous support from Gandel Philanthropy, Flying Arts has been able to dedicate over $40,000 to cross curriculum arts incursions this year.

After reviewing and considering 24 applications, the following 12 schools have been granted financial support from the Flying Arts Alliance Small Schools Fund in 2019.
