Dealing with the changing light and dissipating fog is one of the most challenging things about painting en plein air on the Oregon coast.
I started the Garibaldi Harbor painting on an overcast, misty morning. I had a feeling the fog would burn off soon, so I painted the background first, while the marine layer existed. An hour later, when blue skies appeared, the tone had been set and I could use the new light to create a little sparkle in the boat's details.
The plan worked perfectly, if I don't say so myself ;)
