Bishops lead prayers for those affected by dam fears in Derbyshire

Bishop Libby and Bishop Jan have said those affected by the partial collapse of the Toddbrook Reservoir dam will be in the prayers of the whole Diocese. The Diocese of Chester, of which Whaley Bridge is a part, has released a prayer for all those effected by flooding in Cheshire and those affected as a result of the dam damage.

Bishop Libby said "Our prayers continue for all those affected by the risk of collapse of Toddbrook Reservoir Dam. We pray for those evacuated from their homes, the community of Whaley Bridge, the Emergency Services and all those working tirelessly to prevent collapse and avert the danger.

The evacuation prompted a sense of community and care that has been wonderful to see. Those displaced from Whaley Bridge have been met with hospitality and generosity, from Chapel-en-le-Frith and beyond. People of all faiths and none have come together, in partnership with statutory providers, with practical and emotional support. We honour those who have been working, despite the risks involved, to keep the people of Whaley Bridge safe.

We are conscious of the effect this situation must have had on all those impacted and involved. So, as we hope the danger passes and longer term solutions are found, as people return to their homes and businesses, we continue to offer our support with compassion and hope".

A prayer for those affected by flooding

by the Diocese of Chester

Compassionate God, we remember today all those whose homes and communities have been damaged by flooding in Cheshire.

We give thanks for the courage and dedication of the emergency services who have come to the help and rescue of all in need.

We ask you to look with care and love on the community in Whaley Bridge as they watch anxiously the work being done to repair the dam at the Toddbrook Reservoir.

We pray for those who have been evacuated from their homes and we celebrate the kindness of neighbours in caring for the most vulnerable and those in need.

Finally, we ask in the power of your healing Spirit to rebuild not just the physical communities which are coping with many problems today but also to give us a sense of trust in your goodness through the kindnesses of one another, in Your Holy Name.

Amen.

University of Derby project

The University of Derby is developing its Civic University Agreement, a document that will reaffirm the University’s ongoing commitment to playing its part in the city and county’s prosperity and wellbeing. This will eventually lead it to becoming a true ‘Civic University’.

The first part of this is understanding itself, and the local communities (focusing on the city and county), to best establish what the real needs and priorities are, before working out how the University can work/co-create with others to help address some of these challenges.

As part of this, it is undertaking a consultation exercise and has an online survey which it is encouraging as many people as possible across Derby and Derbyshire to complete.

Learning in Faith is our diocesan programme of learning opportunities for 2019.

We are really excited to offer a huge range of courses and training events in venues across the Diocese that are fun, educational, interactive and engaging.
