AUGUST AT THE SIFTON-COOK HERITAGE CENTRE
It begins with a busy holiday weekend named in honour of our Father of Confederation, James Cockburn, and ends with the ever-popular
Bake Sale.  Read on to find out what else, what happened last month, and meet our young summer staff!

More Program Details

Sidewalk Sale
On August 2 & 3 two of our young summer staff will be taking time away from the Centre and taking some artifacts with them, bringing the museum to the market place.  Irelande and Matthew will be stationed outside the CIBC just east of Victoria Hall.  We know a lot of people find the idea of a Museum or Heritage Centre intimidating.  Hopefully, meeting one at a Sidewalk Sale will help.  If you are downtown on one of those days please stop by to say Hi.
Thanks to you all.

One-Act Play
On August 5, the Cockburn Day holiday Monday, James Cockburn (aka Rob Franklin) will be on hand, working himself up into a lather as he prepares to deliver his once-in-a-lifetime Confederation speech.  Best to bring a folding chair and head covering in case of sun or rain!

Garden Talk
On Saturday, August 10, Volunteer Brenda Carter will be calling on her nursing, cooking and gardening experience as she introduces us to the various plants growing on site.  Brenda has developed our prolific herb garden (you might want to take home a sample) as well as the variety of native plants found around the property.

Sunday Music
The next day, Sunday August 11, Mel Blaker will be making a return visit as he brings his wide selection of popular music and humour for a relaxing afternoon in the courtyard.  It rarely rains when Mel visits!

Art in August
We have enjoyed having Artist-in-Residence, Rod Bergeron and students with us on Wednesdays during the summer.  As a fitting conclusion we will be hosting our second evening event of the year, “An Evening with Rod Bergeron”, on Thursday, August 15.  Meet the artist and discover what has inspired him during those Wednesday mornings on-site.

Bake Sale
The final “Event” of the month will be our popular Bake Sale on Saturday, August 24, starting at 9am.  Come early, buy lots, and support your CMF at this important fundraiser!

Summer Staff

Three young summer staff
Our three young people on summer staff:

IRELANDE was a volunteer with us last summer and worked so hard she is back for nine weeks this year as administrative assistant and guide.  She has just graduated from high school and will be studying psychology and political science at Queen's University starting in the fall.

MATTHEW has also recently graduated from high school and has a number of jobs on the go including helping us with maintenance and guiding four mornings a week.  One of Matthew’s other gigs is as an actor!

RACQUEL comes to us having put in a number of summers with Alnwick/Haldimand Township.  Her main responsibility is converting archival work done by one of last year’s students into a searchable on-line format.   Racquel is going into her fourth year at Queen’s University, pursuing a career in counselling.

We are extremely grateful to the following for funding:
Irelande’s position - the Federal Canada Summer Jobs Program
Racquel’s position - the Federal Young Canada Works In Heritage Organizations Program (Canadian Museums Association) & Cobourg Community Grant
Matthew’s position - the Provincial Youth Job Connection: Summer Program
