City Launches CareerReady NYC to Better Prepare Young New Yorkers for Economic Success
Last week, the de Blasio administration announced the launch of CareerReady NYC, a new initiative to prepare young New Yorkers for reach adulthood prepared for economic self-sufficiency and career success. CareerReady NYC works to align the components of the “public talent pipeline” -- K-12 public schools, publicly administered workforce programs, and the CUNY system -- within a coordinated system of academics, work-based learning experiences, and comprehensive supports. Core to the initiative is a set of changes to the City’s Summer Youth Employment Program; an expansion of career exploration opportunities from middle school through college; greater emphasis on “early college” learning opportunities for high school students; and a new approach to engaging employers as full partners in the youth workforce system.
This strategy is outlined in the report CareerReady NYC: Preparing Young New Yorkers for Career Success released by the NYC Center for Youth Employment, and has a particular focus on young people in low-income and minority communities who need more equitable access to the work experiences, learning opportunities, professional networks, and supportive guidance necessary to successfully enter the workforce. The central driver of the initiative is a Career Readiness Framework that maps out developmentally appropriate activities for youth that help them build the foundation for career success. It explicitly links education, career exploration, and work experience in mutually reinforcing ways, and supports acquisition of both general employability skills and specific technical skills. The developmental milestones it sets for youth at different ages and stages of development will help shape the design of both current and new programs, and guide how City agencies manage and evaluate these programs and the providers who deliver them.
We encourage all Coalition members, partners and system stakeholders to consider presenting a workshop session at the NYCETC 2019 Conference and spread the best practices they've developed developed over the past year. You may propose a workshop highlighting your organization and programs, or a collaboration with partner organizations and service providers.

Some examples from last year's great workshops include "Build Holistic Workforce Programs: The Value of Social Workers and Navigators" with Per Scholas, The Door, Isaacs Center and Green City Force; "Establishing Equity on the Demand Side: Employer Inclusion Goals" with NEW and Viacom; and "Progressive Organizations Can Resist the Internship Industrial Complex: Building Equity and Access Into Internships" with Friends of the High Line, Pier55, Pay Our Interns, and Jobs for the Future.

August 20 Info Session: NYS Workforce Development Initiative & Consolidated Funding Application
The NYC Employment and Training Coalition, the New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals, the Workforce Development Institute and the Empire State Development will co-host a NYS Workforce Development Initiative Info Session on Tuesday, August 20 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm for training providers, higher education institutions, labor unions, employers, and other workforce and economic development stakeholders to learn about the application process, discuss best practices and strategies for submitting successful applications, and form partnerships through facilitated networking. Sign-On by August 2: FY 2020 Budget Letter Urging Opposition to Federal Funding Cuts
The Federal Tax and Budget Response Team is asking New York City human service providers, faith organizations, and policy experts to sign and share this letter urging the New York City congressional delegation to oppose funding cuts to vital programs in the federal FY 2020 budget. The sign-on deadline is August 2.
The Federal Tax and Budget Response Team is a state-based coalition whose members include FPWA, Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New York, UJA-Federation of New York, Fiscal Policy Institute, New York Housing Conference, LiveOn NY, Human Services Council of New York, United Neighborhood Houses, and more.
Funding Opportunity: USDOL Grant to Support Women Affected by the Opioid Crisis Re-enter the Workforce
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Women’s Bureau announced a new grant program to help women who have been directly or indirectly affected by the opioid crisis re-enter the workforce. The Re-Employment, Support, and Training for the Opioid Related Epidemic (RESTORE) grant will award $2.5 million to up to 6 organizations that assist in providing coordinated, employment-focused services to women.
Organizations applying must provide the following types of activities:
Providing skills development and employment services to women workers affected by the opioid crisis;
Establishing a new program or expanding an existing program to quickly address the urgent challenges faced by women in areas of the country hardest hit by the opioid crisis; and
Forming partnerships with key stakeholders, including women's organizations and state and local women's commissions, as well as agencies and organizations in workforce development, public health and substance abuse, human services, and other supportive services.

Funding Opportunity: Youth Service Capacity-Building Grants via William T. Grant Foundation
The William T. Grant Foundation has launched a new grant program aimed at small to mid-size youth-serving organizations in the five boroughs, the Youth Service Capacity-Building Grants. The program awards grants of $60,000 for general operating support to allow grantees the flexibility to allocate the funds for organizational capacity-building needs over a 3-year term. The Foundation will also secure technical assistance to assist grantees in successfully implementing their organizational capacity-building goals. To be eligible organizations must have an operating budget between $250,000 and $1 million.
In addition to the criteria above, applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:
Currently provide direct youth services in one of the ten community districts identified as having the highest community risk to child well-being by the Citizen’s Committee for Children.
Have well-defined existing programming tailored specifically to youth of Mexican-descent or LGBTQ youth.
Have leaders (Executive Director or CEO) who are people of color or LGBTQ individuals.
STRIVE: Green Construction/Maintenance Training Program
9 week program provides students with Electrical, Carpentry, and Plumbing training, as well as OSHA-30 construction, Flagger and Scaffolding training and certifications. Currently enrolling students, with program starting on August 23. More info here
General Assembly: American Express Developer Academy
12-week, full-time, in-person software engineering training program with focus on diverse (non-traditional tech backgrounds (non-CS degrees), women, people of color, and minorities) candidates. Successful graduates will be fast-tracked to interviews for a junior software engineer position at Amex with a competitive salary and benefits. Classes start August 26th.
Young Adult Literacy Program @ Isaacs Center
YALP is a holistic pre-HSE program designed for struggling readers and writers who wish to begin working toward their high-school equivalency diploma, supported by stipend and one-on-one social worker sessions.
