Healing Harms & Restoring Relationships within the Community

Summer Greetings to you from RJPSC!
August already! Where does summer go? We hope the season has been good to you thus far! It has been quite a busy summer for us, and we have a few updates to share. So grab your sunhats and sunglasses, because the RJ future is about to get pretty bright. Cheesy, we know....but did you really expect anything less?

RCMP BBQ, August 15th

Come out and meet the folks at your local Sunshine Coast RCMP at 12pm on the lawn of the Sechelt detachment (5800 Teredo St.)!  There will be some good eats - free hot dogs, cake, and refreshments! - and an opportunity to connect. If you're feeling confident you can clock your pitching speed for prizes, or visit with Safety Bear and police dog Lema. There will also be face painting and crafts for kids. RJPSC will even have a table there, so there will be an opportunity to meet some of the RJPSC Board members. Hope you see many of your beautiful faces there!

  • To understand the philosophy of Circles and the Indigenous Practices
  • To learn the value of Circles
  • To determine when a Circle is suitable
  • To prepare participants and the self for a Circle
  • To maintain a Circle from opening to closing

Summer Intensive: August 19-21
We are now accepting names for a waitlist on our summer Peacemaking Circle Training, August 19th - August 21st at Mission Point House (Davis Bay), 9am - 3pm. (Note: this is one that was postponed last winter due to a facilitator health issue, so it has made available to those who had signed up then first).  If you are interested we ask you to email as soon as possible.  We are confirming our participants now and may have one or two spots open up last minute!
The summer PMC training application can be found here.

Fall Wednesday Night Course: September 18 - October 23

We are now accepting names for our Peacemaking Circle (PMC) Training set to take place over six Wednesday evenings this fall: beginning September 18th and running through to October 23rd from 6pm - 9pm at Mission Point House in Davis Bay.

The lovely Nancy Denham and Jan Smalley will be the facilitators for both programs. Space will be limited to 15 participants in each training, but spaces are going fast so register soon! This course is subsidized at a rate of $375, with a participant cost of $50 per person.  This covers the costs of light refreshments, the Manual, as well as any other training materials. We recognize these participant costs may not be accessible for everyone. Please feel free to reach out to explore sponsorship . Payment can be made by cash or cheque, and is also due by Wednesday, September 11th - this will ensure your place is held. To arrange payment please reach out to Maya or Nancy (contact info below). Refreshments will be provided.

Please send your confirmation of participation (both your completed application form and payment plan) to maya@rjpsc by Wednesday, September 11th. Upcoming Community Justice Forum Training

We are thrilled to be offering a Community Justice Forum (CJF) Training this fall through RJPSC, and are now accepting applications. CJF is the main model of Restorative Justice endorsed by the RCMP. Community Justice Forums bring together the offender's supports, the victim, and victim supports, as well as the offender and investigating officer. Where appropriate others who have been harmed or affected by the incident may also attend. A trained facilitator guides participants through a resolution process, using a script to ensure all participants are heard. If you are interested in being a part of this training please contact Jan Smalley (rjpsc@eastlink.ca) for more information.

Dates:
Saturday, October 26th              9am - 4pm
Saturday, November 2nd           9am - 4pm
Saturday, November 16th          9am - 4pm

Where:
Seaside Centre, 5790 Teredo St., Sechelt

The lovely Jan Smalley and Nancy Denham will be your facilitators.

Please contact Jan Smalley (rjpsc@eastlink.ca) to begin the application process no later than Friday, October 11th

Mentorship Opportunity!

Recently we have received modest funding to pilot a six-month mentorship program, and we are currently on the lookout for mentors. Up to 20 volunteers will be paired with folks who either are or have been involved in RJ case files and would like a bit more individualized support. And, as we mentioned above, there will be some new volunteers going through training, so there is an opportunity for people who may be more experienced in RJ facilitation to act as a mentor to a few new trainees, to support them as they grow into a mentor position with the program. We are imagining these one-on-one meetings between mentor and mentee to be a minimum of once per month, and maximum of once per week, ranging anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. We will be holding a mentor orientation/training session on the evening of Monday, August 26th from 6-8pm at Mission Point House in Davis Bay - refreshments provided! We will have a resource package prepared for each mentor so you will know where you might refer your mentees to community resources as appropriate. During this session we will also co-create guiding principles for the mentor/mentee relationships, as well as an evaluation framework. This will allow us to collect feedback and see how the pilot is going over the six months.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in you can contact Maya at maya@rjpsc.ca prior to Friday, August 23rd

Free Online Webinar
If you are interested in an additional learning opportunity, the Crisis and Trauma Research Institute has released a free online webinar about Crisis Response Planning. You can find the video here. After watching the video you may want to download your certificate of completion, as this may be used for your continuing education and/or professional development.
