One of the unexpected joys of writing this newsletter is the sheer mystery of what absolute nonsense will come to the top of my brain on a given day. The hardest part about writing is really just starting, but once you do, it's pretty easy from there, as long as you don't really care too much about what you're writing, which for a newsletter is pretty straightforward as I'm pretty sure nobody actually reads this.

Today is a bit harder though, as my beloved Bose QC-30 noise cancelling headphones which I pretty much rely on to do everything, are at the tech doctor, and I feel quite lost. That said, I did get to experience the profound joy of setting up a new pair of borrowed headphones in the Bose app, which has one of the best pieces of software I've used in recent years, thanks to the 'surprise me' button when it comes to naming your headphones.

Unlike my phone, which is named 'Bobby Fisher' so that every time my car starts up the bluetooth display reads 'Searching For Bobby Fisher' - the Bose system is totally random, and spurts out such gems as:

Raptor Strike
Sparkle Motion
Daddy Stovepipe
Lazy Lester
Tampa Red

and of course, Pope of Mope.

For this week, i'm sticking with old faithful, Sonic Tooth.

So yeah. It's the end of the page here so my work is done for now! The real work you came here to see though, that's a bit further down, so go on. Scrolly scroll.

(Also yes, I know my headphones are probably spying on me. I don't care. As long as nobody can ever see my kindle bookshelf, all other content is fair fame.)

The Podcast

This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing sex toy lawsuits, and how not to suck at colour!

“It’s worth reading this document... as training for yourself on how to write a good email. It’s everything; impassioned but not accusatory, emphatic but it acknowledges the feelings and the needs of the other side, it’s stern but also offers solutions... I think it’s great stuff.”

// Lara Chan-Baker

Each week on our podcast we dissect three links we’ve come across our internet travels. These are jumping off points for what’s shaping issues, processes and happenings in the creative industries today. To find our more about our IRL open tabs events, visit opentabs.rodeo

We chat about Dame suing NYC’s transit agency over a sexist double standard for advertising

and then we’re taught ‘How To Not Suck At Colour’

Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down / Shaka

White unsubscribe links. (Jeremy)

Shamefully Shaka-less.

The Gallery

Lamington Drive is an exhibition space, art school and a great way to meet other artists. Feeling lonely? Come to a show!

Lamington Drive Residency

LDR operates in two parts – 4 emerging illustrators and image-makers will work in-residence at the gallery for a duration of 8 weeks, encouraging on-site production and exploration (which will be open to the eyes of the public throughout).

This is followed by a dedicated group exhibition of the finished work created in that time, opening mid August.

Come down to the gallery between 11-6pm Wednesdays through Fridays and 12-5 Saturdays to check out what our residents are getting up to!

The above artwork is by current LD resident Tara Whalley.

The Gardens

Clear the mind. Feed the process. Jacky Winter Gardens is a creative retreat nestled in a half-acre of natural bushland only 45 minutes from Melbourne. It’s a perfect getaway for solo travellers, couples and small groups.

"The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the Eyes of others only a Green thing that stands in the way. Some see Nature all ridicule and deformity, and by these I shall not regulate my proportions; and some scarce see Nature at all. But to the Eyes of the Man of Imagination, Nature is Imagination itself."
