Art Workshop

Our art workshop is still ongoing and carers have said how great they have found this group. Many have said they find it relaxing and that it allows them to have time out for themselves. This is a group for all abilities so all welcome!

Yoga Workshop
 
When: Wednesday 7th August
Time: 9:30am-10:30am
Where: 32 Hampton Road, Twickenham, TW2 5QB (although may be subject to change)
 
Our monthly yoga workshops continue (the next date is to be confirmed) and we have received some fantastic feedback from attendees so far! We are currently looking at alternative venues, we will keep you updated. All abilities are welcome.

Carers Trip - Kensington Palace

Time: 2pm (TBC)
Location: Kensington Palace, Kensington Gardens, London W8 4PX

We have listened to your feedback about our trips and based on one of your suggestions we are planning to go and visit Kensington Palace for the August carers trip. 




It will be £5 per person and we will cover the rest.

We need a minimum amount of attendance to go ahead with this trip so please do let us know if you would like to come along.

After feedback from our last consulation we are now having the workshops at 12pm and the lunch at 1pm; to attend the lunch you must also attend the workshop. To minimise disruption please ensure that you arrive on time. Unfortunately we will not be able to let late arrivals in unless we are informed prior that you will not be able to arrive on time. Carers Lunch

Suzy has very kindly offered to run another carers group; this will centre around an informal talking group, run on a monthly basis in a local café. The details are still being fine tuned so come to the workshop to find out more!

Come and learn at Kew in August


They offer an exciting range of accessible opportunities for groups and individuals to learn more about our science, history, collections, and horticulture.

All their visitor learning events are open to groups and individuals who are members of the Community Membership Scheme.  All sessions are free unless stated otherwise. Group leader training at Kew


Kew offers a variety of continuous professional development opportunities to support group leaders to bring their groups independently to Kew and ensure that they have the skills, confidence and resources they need to learn about our collections and Kew science in the gardens. During their sessions group leaders will learn how to engage groups with Kew’s science and history, participate in activities to enable them to develop their enquiry-based learning skills and develop ideas for independent visits. Booking is essential as places are limited.
 
Monday 12 August, 2- 4pm                 

Community Learning: Using Kew’s learning cards and resource bags.

Tuesday 10 September, 1 – 3:30pm  

Youth engagement at Kew: engaging young people with the natural world using learning resources developed collaboratively with Kew’s Youth Forum. Please contact youth@kew.org to book this session only.
 
Volunteer Family Community Connectors, closing date 18/08/19: this is a new volunteering opportunity at Kew - Volunteer Family Community Connectors. They are looking for friendly people with good links to other families within the local community of Richmond Upon Thames and an interest in plants and the work of RBG Kew. To apply for this role, you need to be a resident of the borough of Richmond Upon Thames. Find out more and apply for the role here.

Community Horticulture


Sunday 4th August 2-4pm:


Monthly Horticulture Workshop – The joy of composting. With the arrival of the new hot compost bin and wormery at the allotment come to discover the magic of composting. No booking is required, but please email if you are planning on bringing a group of more than five people.
 
Tuesday 20th August 1-4pm:

Tool Shed Workshop – Carve a butter knife.
Join their monthly DIY skills workshop. Each month they tackle a new challenge. In August’s workshop they will be carving butter knives from green wood. Booking is essential.
 
All workshops in August take place in the Lion Gate community allotments, entrance via Lion Gate, and are open to all adult members of the Kew Community Membership Scheme.
 
 
Foundation Horticulture Course: Calling group leaders! They are looking for a community group to take part in a four-day foundation Horticulture course this September. The course will introduce your group to the basics of horticulture including vegetable and food growing, plant propagation, weeds & control, compost and tool care. Please contact communitylearning@kew.org for more details, including to discuss dates.


Discovery & Access Learning

 
Sunday 4 August, 11:30am: Monthly British Sign Language tours - Led by their specially trained tour guides these monthly British Sign Language tours for anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing offer a fascinating overview of the Gardens, its history and important scientific work. Tour lasts approximately 90min. Booking is essential. (Every first Sunday of each month, except December and January).

Sunday 11 August, 11.30am:  Sensory guided walking tours for visitors with sight loss & carers - These sensory guided walking tours are led by one of Kew’s specially trained tour guides. Tour lasts approximately 60min. Booking essential. (Every second Sunday of the month).

Tuesday 20 August, 10.30am: Health walks for people living with dementia and their carers - Our walks are led by Kew's volunteer walk leaders and last about 60min. Booking is essential (Every third Tuesday of the month).

Community Learning


Wednesday 21 August, 10:30 – 12noon: Knitting Nature, learn about Kew's science and rare plants through a fun and friendly knit and natter group. All ability levels welcome. Basic materials will be provided. Booking essential.

Friday 17 August, 11 – 12:30pm: Plant Poets’ corner, learn about Kew's rare and endangered plants through creative poetry activities, and discover new ways to express yourself. All ability levels welcome (Every third Friday of the month). Booking is essential.

Friday 17 August, 1 – 2pm: Shared Stories, join them amongst the plants to discover your hidden writing talents and uncover the unique stories in our collections. All workshops are accessible for people with English as a Second Language. All ability levels welcome. No booking is required, but please contact communitylearning@kew.org if you are planning on bringing a group of more than five people.
 

Family and Early years


Every Sunday, 1, 2 and 3pm: Sunday Stories. Join their storytellers every Sunday to discover the extraordinary relationship between people and plants. You can see some of these incredible plants for yourself growing in our recently restored Temperate House and around the Gardens. No booking required. Please check the website in advance of your visit for up to date details of location.
 
Every Friday throughout August, 10.30 to 11.30am: Family Tours of the Kitchen Garden. They are offering family tours of the Kitchen Garden every Friday throughout the summer, aimed at children aged 7 to 11 years. Families will learn about their amazing Kitchen Garden at Kew and how it fed the kings and queens of the past. From apples and tomatoes to courgettes and beans, find out more about the huge variety of fruit and vegetables grown here throughout the year. Numbers are limited and on a first come first served basis please meet at the Guides’ Information Desk at Victoria Gate 10 minutes before the start of the tour.

Community Resource Bags: Book a community resource bag during a self-led group visit to Kew. Their community resource bags are full of learning aids and sensory items aimed at making sure all groups that visit Kew get the most out of their time and experience. Containing clipboards, pencils, magnifying glasses and much more, these bags are available to book during your group visits. Contact communitylearning@kew.org

Chihuly: Reflections on nature, 13 April to 27 October 2019

The world's most celebrated contemporary glass artist is back, showcasing his work against the stunning backdrop of Kew Gardens. In the most biodiverse place in the world, you will see the perfect marriage of art, science and nature as Chihuly's dazzling sculptures transform our Gardens and glasshouses into a contemporary outdoor gallery space. Unique art installations will be situated across the grounds, including the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art.

The Children’s Garden: You can now book online in advance for the Children’s Garden. This will allow you to select a 90-minute timeslot in advance of your visit (at no extra cost). Tickets will then be scanned either from paper or a mobile device upon entry to the Children’s Garden. Each Monday we will release ticketed timeslots for the following week (a very small number of early-bird tickets will be available to book several months in advance). Exotica: Shirley Shirwood Gallery, 13 April to 27 October 2019.

This exhibition celebrates the excitingly exotic and different in the plant world. Exotica are defined as interesting, unusual objects seen in unfamiliar surroundings, far away from their distant countries of origin. Come and see our stunning new collection of around 30 paintings, depicting waterlilies, lotus, water hyacinth, passion flowers and more. Many of these striking unfamiliar plants can be found growing somewhere at Kew but often originate in the southern hemisphere tropics
