Guyana’s Jeffrey, King set for Williams International

Multiple Guyanese and Caribbean Champions Kristian Jeffrey and Andrew King are the first overseas drivers confirmed for the Williams Industries International Race Meet at Bushy Park Barbados over the weekend of August 31/September 1. The highlight of the facility’s 2019 circuit racing season, the meet is organised by Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc (BPMSI) and staged with additional backing from Digicel Barbados and the Tourism Development Corporation (TDC).

The two Guyanese drivers have been among the most regular regional visitors to Bushy Park, and among the most successful; while Jeffrey enjoyed a sensational debut shortly after the St Philip facility was redeveloped in 2014, with a winning hat-trick on the way to the first of his two back-to-back Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) titles, King’s record dates back to a decade earlier, when he battled in Group 3C with fellow-countryman Mark Vieira against the ‘home team’ of Doug and Mark Maloney in the first regional race meet supported by Williams Industries in 2004.

Although the CMRC, which this annual Race Meet has hosted since 2008, no longer exists in its most recent format, a number of the Caribbean’s leading drivers are signed up to face off for the first time this year. The Williams Industries International Race Meet will run on the 2.01-kilometre International Circuit, with practice and qualifying on Saturday and racing on Sunday; the schedule will also include the third round of the Radical Caribbean SR3 Cup, along with races for BPMSI’s own Championship classes.

BPMSI Chairman Sean Maloney says: “We are really happy to be able to confirm the participation of Kristian and Andrew; they are class drivers, have won many championships between them and will bring some real excitement to the weekend. We will be confirming more drivers in the coming weeks, once our friends in Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago have completed their upcoming race meets, and the feedback has been very positive.”

Seven wins for Zane Maloney in British F4

As competitors in the 2019 F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost approach the end of the five-week summer break, Bushy Park-sponsored Zane Maloney can look back on a job well done in the first half of the season. The Carlin-run driver heads in to the sixth race weekend at Snetterton in Norfolk next weekend (August 3/4) leading the overall title chase by 54 points, and with an advantage of almost 100 points in the Novice Standings. Last Wednesday (July 24), he once again topped the time sheets at an Official Test Day, faster than his rivals morning and afternoon.

He has claimed a record-breaking seven consecutive outright victories since Thruxton in May, has finished top Novice on 10 occasions since the season started at Brands Hatch in April, and netted £15,000 in prizes for winning both the Ford Rookie and Triple Crown awards. But the season is only half done; after Snetterton, the Championship returns to Thruxton (August 17/18), where Zane claimed his first two race wins on a circuit he really enjoys, then travels to Knockhill in Scotland (September 14/15) and on to Silverstone two weeks later, before returning to Brands Hatch (October 12/13) for the final weekend on the world-famous Grand Prix layout.

Zane, who has twice been nominated as The Nation’s Athlete of the Week in recent weeks, says: “This season has started off amazingly. Five weekends in and we are now the British F4 Championship leaders with quite a few wins. The team have just done an incredible job. The weekend at Oulton Park in particular was unbelievable, definitely the best of my life. £10,000, three wins and many championship points. Everyone from Carlin has been on it all year; we’ve put everything together and I don’t think it could be any better. Hopefully we can make it even better in the second half of the season!”

Daniel, Bishop star turns at Full Throttle 3

Having lost its original date for Full Throttle 3 in June to another bout of bad weather, the Barbados Association of Dragsters & Drifters (BADD) returned to Bushy Park on Sunday, July 7 to complete the fixture. Although electrical and mechanical issues resulted in a smaller turn-out than expected, the entry included four newcomers, maintaining BADD’s trend for the year, and competition was tight.

Kelvin ‘Bird’ Daniel, who had won the Bike class in May and lowered his own record, set in June 2016, by four-hundredths to 6.178secs on his Kawasaki ZX-10R, was again the star turn. He set the fastest time for the night at 6.236s, the only serious challenger to Robert Bishop, who was once again the fastest man on four wheels in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX, winning the 6.0-7.0secs bracket with a time of 6.242s.

With only five brackets run, the other class winners were 2016 BADD Overall Champion Jeremy ‘Silent’ Greenidge (Mitsubishi Colt), who topped the 7.0-8.0secs bracket; Kevin Griffith claimed the 8.0-9.0secs bracket in his twin-charged Toyota; Rommel Holder won the 9.0-10.0secs bracket in his Westfield, after a very close race with Tyrone Martindale (Honda CRX); finally, reigning BADD Champion Andre Walcott won the 10.0-11.00secs bracket in his Suzuki Swift.

BADD Chairman Jason Downey said: “We had a drama-free event for a change and it was good to welcome four newcomers to the Club. It was a pity that we lost some of our potential front-runners to various technical issues, but we still had a good evening of competition. Although there were only five brackets, there were some relatively large ones and some close battles. I’m looking forward to our next event on September 15.”

Ullyett, Mallalieu fight for BKA Championship

The battle for the Barbados Karting Association’s (BKA) 2019 Sectus Technologies International Championship hotted up at Bushy Park on July 7, the Club’s third of six race days for the year, this one sponsored by D&A Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Points leader Daniel Ullyett won just two of his 60cc Cadet class races, while his closest challenger Adam Mallalieu won all four in the 125cc Easykart Seniors, setting up a good fight for the second half of the season.

As before, the Cadets ran on their own, with Aeden Bruce improving on his round two performance, when he won the day’s first race; this month, he enjoyed a day of close tussles with Ullyett, grabbing the lead on the final lap of the first race, then leading all the way in race two. Bruce fought back after that, leading throughout race three, before swapping places back and forth in the final outing. After Jacob Mustor finished third in the first two races, Blake Thompson made his way on to the podium in races three and four.

In the Seniors, reigning Champion Mallalieu again claimed pole position, then went on to clock up his first clean sweep of the season, with Stuart Maloney and Kayleigh Catwell sharing the podium places in the first three races, Mark Thompson finishing third behind Mallalieu and Catwell in race four.

In the 100cc Juniors, pole-sitter Calem Maloney returned to his dominant form of the opening round, winning all four races, with Adam Marshall and Colin Bradshaw sharing the podium places equally.

BARL members race the clock at Bushy Park

A small but varied field of cars and drivers, from beginners in bona-fide street cars to seasoned drivers in full race cars, entered the Barbados Auto Racing League’s (BARL) inaugural Time Attack event at Bushy Park on the last Sunday in June. After a delay following technical difficulties with the transponder system, competitors headed straight in to Qualifying, with drivers sent out twice to set three flying lap times. In the elimination rounds, drivers were paired up to do a maximum of three lead/chase runs, where the winner is determined by whether the gap between the two cars has closed (chase car wins) or widened (lead car wins); the best of three is the winner.

The field was divided in to four groups, with Kyle Hinckson (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X) the sole entry in the Enthusiast Class; the Tuner Class comprised Ayrton Bannister and Justin Campbell sharing a Honda Civic Type-R, Robert Gill (Daihatsu Charmant) and Barry Stuart (Civic Type-R); Dwayne Thomas (Evo VIII) was alone in Tuner+, while the Racecar Class attracted Ross Callendar (Charmant), Andre Corbin (Toyota Corolla), Verdon Inniss and Kevin Wiggins in Toyota Starlets.

After Qualifying, sole Tuner+ entry Thomas was fastest overall with a blistering 1m 08.577s, while Stuart (1:12.026) led the Tuner Class, Inniss (1:13.400) the Racecar Class and Hinckson clocked 1:19.439 in the Enthusiast Class. Bannister/Campbell, Inniss and Wiggins retired, while Callendar incurred a Qualifying penalty, gifting Thomas automatic advancement to the final, leaving the rest to run head-to-head to determine his opponent. Stuart (personal best - 1:11.755) won both rounds of his match-up against Hinckson (PB - 1:15.283), while Corbin (PB - 1:15.356) also eliminated Gill (PB - 1:21.747) in two rounds. Stuart (PB - 1:11.764) then defeated Corbin (PB - 1:14.504) in the Semi-Final to set up a Final with Thomas: despite improving his time further, to 1:11.539, Stuart still lost out to Thomas (1:08.791) in Run 1, then improved by another half-second with an on-the-limit drive in Run 2 (1:11.035) . . . but it wasn’t enough to keep the win (and overall victory) from Thomas, who clocked 1:09.507.
