Vice President Message

Hi everyone to another information filled Newsbrief.

Initial preparations for the 2020 convention on the last weekend in June at Wangaratta have been finalised with the venues booked for the convention and the Saturday night dinner. Now we have to start organising speakers and workshop presenters which I have been assured that Ian Rolfe has in hand.

The new website is coming along really well. Not too long before we are able to release it. It may need some tweaking as we go, but that is the case for all websites. We have been very lucky with obtaining the development at a very good price ala ‘mates’ rates by the person who developed the APS website.

Clubs will have access to their own data and will be responsible for updating it when changes occur. Annual membership/affiliation fees will be completely online. No more paperwork to complete. Payment options will be Direct debit, cheque and Paypal. VAPS has applied for charity status which will significantly reduce the Paypal fee for the payer.

Convention registration and Year Bar applications will also be completely online and again various payment options will be available. Meritorious and Service award applications will continue as a downloaded document, but we are looking at putting them online also.

Each club will have a Gallery area which again will be managed by the clubs.
Victorian Judges list will be a downloadable document that each club and judge will be able to access. It will not be available to the general public for privacy issues.

That is all the news that I have to share with you all at the moment.

Alfred Zommers

VAPS Convention
Meritorious Service Award.
Elaine Collier

Elaine's thirteen years with the Latrobe Valley Camera Club has found her to be a supportive and inclusive member of that club. Her commitment to and support play a big role in the ongoing “good community” feel within the club. She often assists less abled members with transport to and from club events. Elaine’s inclusiveness is often noticeable in her interactions at meetings and outings. Her quiet and efficient behind the scenes support is appreciated by all.

Her more formal roles include being Secretary and also editor of the Newsletter from 2010 to 2013 and a committee member until 2015. She assisted with the Gippy Interclub as a committee member, co-ordinated the club entries for VAPS, the GIPPY interclub, the Glennie and ‘ImagesInaction.’ She was the community liaison person between her club and Latrobe City Council.

She has provided assistance for the matting of competition entries for the Gippy Interclub and the delivery of entries to locations throughout Gippsland for both Latrobe Valley Camera Club and other clubs across the region. This includes the yearly co-ordination of the delivery of Gippy Interclub entries to different locations since its inception.

In regard to teaching Elaine has presented talks and workshops on back to basics techniques and pet photography hints to the club at meetings over the last 13 years and she gave a Steel Wool Night photography presentation in 2012 which was highly successful. Elaine consistently offers book resources on pet photography and location sites for optimum photographic opportunities to club members.

Elaine has supported the club’s public profile through the Summer Nights Festival, assisting in the set up logistics and the manning of the site. She was a major contributor with both time and photography to the ImageInaction Exhibition in 2015 assisting in the organisation, construction & hanging of the exhibition. Elaine often volunteers photography time and skills at a local community dog club and gifts the photos taken.

She has volunteered photography assistance for the Latrobe City Garden Competitions for four years. She has assisted photographically with the Latrobe City Australia Day Ceremony. Elaine has contributed entries to The Glennie, VAPS, Gippy Interclub, Warragul National Exhibition, Gippsland Cancer Care Centre (ongoing) and Latrobe Regional Hospital’s permanent display. She also made a photo donation for the 2008 Camera Club Auction which was a fundraising activity for cancer care.

Having travelled overseas with professional photographers, she is willing to present talks about the trips and show her work which has seen a number of members take up similar opportunities in travel photography. Forever the quiet achiever, she is an extremely valued volunteer within the club, assisting in the workings of the Latrobe Valley Camera Club in the many ways that she does so well, and in her quiet and competent manner. The VAPS committee and the members of her club are delighted to present her with the Meritorious Services award.
SARAH KNIGHT accepted the award on behalf of RITA BROWN

Rita Brown joined Ivanhoe Photographic Society in 2009 and instantly immersed herself in all general club activities before joining the Committee as Secretary the same year.

A regular contributor to the club’s and interclub competitions, she also participated in all IPS public exhibitions including the 2018 Banyule Council’s Art Space ‘Water’ exhibition.

She has constantly encouraged and supported Committee members who arrange special events and she herself was a highly active member in organising the club’s 60th Anniversary celebrations.  At that event Rita had, through her family business, high quality polystyrene cameras made for the centre of each table at the celebratory dinner, in addition to a large standalone camera with the club logo in the ‘lens’ used as a focal display.

She has always volunteered as a mentor to students at the club’s basic photography course.  She enthusiastically organised club practical workshops like ‘Water Droplets’ despite her limited technical knowledge in the field.  She has regularly attended outings around the city, into the Yarra Valley and beyond.  She also has given great support at fundraising events such as Bunnings sausage sizzles.

For three years she was the Syllabus Convenor, securing some fantastic guest presenters.  It was not uncommon for her to quickly engage with VAPS speakers and secure them for presenting to club members the following year.

In the life of many clubs there are times when someone needs to step in to steer the club through significant challenges.  This happened to Ivanhoe Photography Society in 2015. Rita accepted the position of President and guided IPS capably and expertly for two years.  Her knowledge of business and technical issues was a great help at that time when reorganisation was needed.

Through a huge investment of time and learning, Rita researched, prepared and rolled out the use of software for all club members to submit images to competitions through the Internet.  This task provided major benefits to the club members and Competitions Committee. The club is enormously in her debt for the huge amount of dedicated work she put in at this tumultuous time.

Rita has always displayed pride in being a member of Ivanhoe Photographic Society Inc. During her years as President, her fierce determination for the club to prosper and thrive for many years to come was strongly evident.

The club and VAPS thank her for such commitment and gladly award her a Meritorious Service Award.

APJA - Judges Association
August 2019

APJA so far this year has run two full day training events being Level 1 (at Williamstown with the help of the Williamstown Club) and Level 2 (at Wandin with the help of the Yarra Ranges Club).

Around 60 VAPS club members attended this training with approximately 30 attending each event. We hope that in the future some of these members will take up judging at clubs either individually or as part of club panels. Hopefully, also these members will take their knowledge back to their clubs and be able to help others in general with their photography.

Level 4 training is scheduled for 18th August, if you wish to enrol see further in this newsletter.

APJA is a small group with really just one aim- to improve through education the skills of existing judges, and to train others to maybe take up judging or to improve their photography skills through knowledge.

The development of the content of each of the 6 levels is still an ongoing project, securing, venues, and presenters is a task in itself. We do our best to keep the costs down, and really appreciate the help from VAPS.

Our thanks to Tania Chalmers (Williamstown)  for looking after the Treasurer’s role for the past couple of years and also Margaret Zommers for her work as Secretary.

The APJA AGM was held last month (July).

APSCON 2019 Judging
APSCON 2019 – Judging Presentation and Discussion with Paul Robinson

Victoria Room, Mercure Hotel, Ballarat

Friday 13th September

2:30pm to 4:00pm

Australian Photographic Judges Association Meeting

The APS and convention organisers are thanked for the opportunity to hold this meeting in response to big picture issues facing photography judging in Australia.

It is designed as an initial exploration of three key points about how to meet growing needs for:

1. Training judges nationally

2. Availability of trained judges for National and International Salons held in Australia

3. How to manage the long-term needs of photography judging in Australia

Time permitting two further topics to consider are:

. Interstate clubs requesting judges from other States to judge their monthly competitions
. Photography clubs along State borders needing judges who are more readily available from the neighbouring State

The meeting is open to any APS members who have an interest in the judging fraternity in Australia but is especially aimed at members who are managing State conducted judging programs; their input to discussing the issues would be appreciated.

Any prior communication about this meeting would be helpful.

“LIVING IN AN ANALOGUE WORLD” PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
For the 19th year, the Analogue Photography Group at The Melbourne Camera Club will have an exhibition under the title “Living in an Analogue World”. You may remember us as the Traditional Darkroom Printmakers Group. We have changed our name to fit with the terminology being used by many of the new film and darkroom users.

All the prints in the exhibition have been produced by analogue methods. Most will be silver-gelatin prints, but some will have been the product of alternative photography techniques, for example Cyanotype, Gum Bichromate and Carbon Printing.

“Living in an Analogue World”, will be open to the public on the weekends of Saturday 31 August & Sunday 1 September and Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 September, from 10 am to 4 pm at the Melbourne Camera Club.   Free admission, everyone very welcome.
