Dachshunds star on ITV's "This morning"

Vicky Wand and Hayley Chapman-Reith were invited to take their Dachshunds onto ITV’s “This Morning” show on July 11th. Vicky has kindly written about their experience for us. She is a member of the Southern Dachshund Association and Hayley is an SDA Committee member. What a great advert for these happy, outgoing, show dogs.

Subsidised KC/BVA Eye Screening

The Dachshund Club will be hosting a clinical eye screening session at their Championship Show on 16th November at the KC Building, Stoneleigh. Dr Peter Bedford is the panel eye specialist who will be carrying out the screening.

Our charity, Dachshund Health UK, has agreed to offer subsidies to Dachshund owners so the cost of this test will be just £20. The session will be open to other breeds at a cost of £42 per dog.

To book a place, please contact Daphne Graham

Examination under the Eye Scheme is not restricted to the identification of inherited eye disease, but also includes general assessment of the health of the eye and adnexa (eyelids, tear ducts and other parts around the eye ball).

The Breed Council recommends breeders should carry out clinical eye testing (KC/BVA/ISDS) to check for conditions in addition to cord1 PRA. Read more here about why this is important.

IVDD Screening Milestone

At the end of July, we reached the screening milestone of 100 dogs. It's taken 32 months to reach this point.

We agreed to hold back on publishing results until there were 100 - at the seminar where we discussed this, people felt we should allow a couple of years to get a reasonable picture of results.

We will now be putting the results online, listing the dog's KC name, variety, sex and X-ray score plus grading. Everyone who has had a subsidy from the Breed Council and DHUK Charity consented to have their results published. Our experience with publishing the Lafora results online was a key step in motivating more breeders to take part and we believe there are many benefits from putting the information in the public domain.

We will continue to subsidise the screening programme which you can read about here.

70% of the dogs screened have had fewer than 5 calcifications, a level which is considered to be lower risk for IVDD. In the Nordic countries, they recommend that dogs with 5 or more calcifications are not used for breeding.

Numerous studies (since the 1960s) have shown that the lower the number of calcifications, the lower the risk of IVDD. In one study, of the dogs which had no calcifications, less than 1 in 10 had IVDD symptoms. In contrast, of the dogs with 5 or more calcifications, two-thirds had symptoms of IVDD. [Lappalainen 2001] Another study showed that dogs with 5 or more calcifications were 18 times more likely to have IVDD symptoms than dogs with no calcifications. [Lappalainen 2014]

Denise Jury (Torwood Mini Longs)

The Trustees of Dachshund Health UK would like to thank Rachel Jury for the very generous donation of £500, from friends and family, following the sad passing of her mother, Denise, in April.
Denise was a great supporter of our IVDD Screening Programme and it is breeders like her, whose commitment to the future health of our breed really sets a good example and makes a real difference. Eight of Denise’s Torwood Mini Longs were screened between 2017 and 2019. Denise and Rachel are also well-known for their Flatcoated Retrievers.
Rachel said: “Denise was a remarkable woman and we are so lucky to have been part of her life. Despite recent poor health, her passion for the dogs never wavered; she remained cheerful and never let anything stop her or get her down. She was an inspiration and will be hugely missed.”
This year, we will reach the 100 dogs screened mark and this donation will enable us to offer further subsidies to encourage more breeders to participate.
As well as our thanks, we send our sincere condolences to Rachel and to Denise’s friends and family.
