(The answer will be in next week’s newsletter.)
Recent News from Marshview Community Organic Farm
Background: UUFB has supported Marshview since its inception in 2007. Mrs. Sara’ Reynolds Green and Bill Green direct the farm program on ancestral family land. St. Helena Island students learn to manage the fields and to plant, nurture, and harvest organic vegetables. They also learn to prepare and present their produce in historic Gullah cooking styles. UUFB members and friends have enjoyed many meals prepared by the young chefs at fund-raising dinners at or near the Gullah Grub restaurant. The young farmers and chefs also learn about Gullah culture through drama and storytelling.
Recent Activity: In 2018, 35 young people were mentored in the Young Farmers program. To date in 2019, 14 are being mentored.
The organic harvest in 2018 consisted of 101 bushels which included squash, onions, cucumbers, okra, corn, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, cabbage, and collard greens. To date in 2019, the farm has produced 61 bushels which includes squash, onions, cucumbers, corn, tomatoes, and kale. After harvesting their spring and summer crops, the farm is ready to be cleared and prepared for the next round of planting.
Since March 2019 the young farmers and chefs have had twice-weekly hands-on training in farming and cooking, 5 hours each session. They’ve enjoyed 5 mini-market days and taken home a portion of all the raw and cooked vegetables they grew and cooked. They’ve led 4 farm tours and participated in 2 news stories, one for the Island Packet and one for Regions Bank. On farm tours at this time of year the students give instructions on the process of putting seed in trays for the fall planting. The seeds are placed in the new greenhouse for germination.
To quote the Greens’ thanks to UUFB: “We are grateful for all your support and the funding received has helped us accomplish many of our goals.”
Thanks was also expressed to UUFB member David Grim who recommended the Marshview students as participants in the Beaufort Reconstruction Era Storycatcher/Backpack Journalist Program. David will assist Mrs. Green in supervising the St. Helena students.
Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Project Update
UUFB is partnered with other Beaufort area faith groups on the LowCountry Habitat for Humanity’s Faith Build House, located at 2523 Mossy Oaks Road. The house’s exterior is now in place, so the remaining volunteer work is ground-level and mostly indoors. The nature of the work will continue to change as the build progresses towards its targeted completion date around the end of August.
Effective July 18, LowCountry Habitat for Humanity has changed its volunteer sign-up process for the Faith Build. Now, volunteers from any faith group can
sign up directly on the Habitat site, in any combination, up to a limit of ten per day. Those who have completed the 1-hour orientation program can sign up for any Tuesday through Saturday they wish. However, we are identifying every Thursday and the occasional Saturday (8/3/19) as days for concentrations of UUFB volunteers. Working together will be a great opportunity to act on our values, to build relationship among our own members and friends and others, in a no-proselytizing interfaith experience.
Those who are interested, and have not yet completed a 1-hour orientation program may attend the next session on Saturday August 10 at 10am, at the Habitat office (616 Parris Island Gateway). Please call Lee McSavaney 843-522-3500 at the Habitat office to attend.
