The exciting work of prevention requires us to reflect upon our past efforts to end domestic and sexual violence in order to carry the lessons we've learned forward as we build beloved communities based on hope, fairness, peace and equity. "The context in which we do our work may change in terms of social and political climate, funding, and the ever-expanding evidence-based, but our goal to prevent violence remains the same" (Continuing the Dialogue, CDC, July 2019).

This issue of the PreventIPV newsletter highlights new resources that explore how lessons learned over years of prevention efforts can inform our strategies for moving our work forward. Key resources include our upcoming September webinar, the soon to be released Policy-Based Prevention DELTA FOCUS story, the Innovation section of the PreventIPV website, as well as newly released podcasts and featured prevention tools.

WEBINAR: DELTA FOCUS STORIES: LESSONS LEARNED FROM 3 COMMUNITY-BASED INITIATIVES

PreventIPV is pleased to showcase the innovative work of 3 community-based prevention initiatives aimed at changing the environments and conditions in which people live, learn, work, play, and age through CDC’s DELTA FOCUS program. This webinar explores the first 3 stories in our 7-part Lessons Learned from DELTA FOCUS series: 1) engaging youth in intimate partner violence prevention, 2) engaging men and boys as intimate partner violence prevention allies, and 3) policy-based prevention approaches.

On this 90-minute webinar, preventionists and change-makers in Alaska, Rhode Island, and North Carolina will share their successes, surprises, pivots, and points of learning along their journeys, offering strategies and tools for those who wish to engage in this work or adapt similar projects for their own communities. Join us as we learn from their experiences and move our collective efforts forward together.

As part of FVPSA’s 2019 Tribal Grantee meeting in Seattle on August 13, 2019, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence was pleased to host an interactive prevention reception showcasing the innovative Native-focused/Native-led prevention work of our colleagues across the domestic violence field!

COMING SOON: POLICY-BASED PREVENTION

“Policy-oriented approaches addressing community- and societal-level risks have the potential to create population-level impact and produce cross-cutting effects on multiple forms of violence.”

The third DELTA FOCUS story will feature coalitions in California, Florida, and North Carolina who used policy-based approaches to have a community-level impact on IPV. The lessons described within highlight the importance of considering the context in which policy is developed and implemented, engaging partners with the right skills at the right time, and providing supports to intended audiences in order to accomplish policy goals.

Continuing the Dialogue: Learning from the Past and Looking to the Future of Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a highly anticipated follow-up piece to their original publication, Sexual Violence Prevention: Beginning the Dialogue (2004). This document explores lessons learned over the past 15 years, highlighting paths forward for the prevention field.

In the second episode of NRCDV Radio’s DELTA FOCUS Story Series, we hear from preventionists featured in Engaging Men and Boys as IPV Prevention Allies. Their approaches focus on media messaging, social norms campaigns, networking/coalition work, peer support, mentorship, and skill building around leveraging community influence to impact change.
