Highlands Complete Streets Walking Tour

Hello B4Lers!
We’re hosting a complete streets walking tour in the Highlands next week, and we’d like to invite you to join us!

On Tuesday, August 6, at 6:00pm, we’re meeting at the corner of Edward St and Hepburn Ave (in front of First Philadelphia Church) to discuss the recent design changes made to three streets in the Highlands: Winter Ave, Barret Ave, and Castlewood Ave.

  • Winter Ave: 4-to-3 Road Diet
  • Barret Ave: Multi-Use Path and 4-to-2 Road Diet
  • Castlewood Ave: Two-Way Protected Bike Lane and 3-to-2 Road Diet

Our friends at Complete Streets for Louisville are helping us with the event, and we’ll be performing a walkability assessment to help them gather data for their proposed complete street ordinance, which goes before the Planning Commission this week (more on that below).

The walk will be a two-mile loop, starting in the Original Highlands and going toward Tyler Park before looping back to our starting spot. We’ll be discussing the great changes that have been made over the last year, as well as the areas that still need improvement (spoiler alert: we need more street trees!).

Since it’ll be an August afternoon in Louisville, it’s bound to be hot. We encourage you to bring your own refreshments, but just in case, we’ll have a cooler full of bottled waters in tow to help keep everyone well-hydrated.

We hope to see you on Tuesday! Please let us know if you have any questions in the meantime!

Support the New Complete Street Ordinance!

On Thursday, August 1, a new complete street ordinance goes before the city’s Planning Commission. We want to invite you to weigh in!

A little background:
In 2008, Louisville adopted a complete streets ordinance. However, it’s time we bring the current policy up to meet national standards by including transparency, public input, and a focus on equity to ensure that complete streets get built in every neighborhood.

Earlier this year, in an effort spearheaded by Kentucky Youth Advocates, a coalition formed called Complete Streets for Louisville. As part of this effort, we’re hoping to see the city implement a stronger policy measure for ensuring safe roadway redesign in the future.

We invite you to voice your support by submitting your written comments to the Planning Commission by 1:00 pm on August 1. You should email your support to Jeff O'Brien, Director of Develop Louisville, and Mike King, Office of Advanced Planning.

Thanks!
