Platinum LEED certification expected to bring economic boost to Monterey Conference Center

After flipping the switch on a new solar panel array, the city of Monterey (MCBC member) is seeking an important environmental certification that could pay off by booking more events at the Monterey Conference Center. The $287,000 project installed 330 solar panels atop the conference center with a 132-kilowatt system, able to generate 15% of the total power consumption of the conference center, said Monterey City Manager Hans Uslar.

The conference center is in the process of receiving a certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program that awards different levels of recognition for energy efficiency, water usage, air quality and choice of building materials as well as environmental factors such as access to public transportation and responsible land use. The city has all but secured a “gold” rating for the conference center and is applying for LEED’s top certification, “platinum.”

LEED buildings have faster lease-up rates and may qualify for a host of incentives like tax rebates. They also retain higher property values, according to the  U.S. Green Building Council.

Monterey Conference Center General Manager Doug Phillips said possessing a LEED certification is desirable in the hospitality industry and a must for some organizations. “People are very concerned now what we are doing for the environment,” Phillips said. “That, in turn, generates a lot more interest and opportunities for us. Some groups will not go to a property that is not taking these steps. We have been asked if we are LEED certified. Read more

Monterey County Planning Commission workshop focuses on Moss Landing's future growth issues

Can Moss Landing handle an expansion of some of the world’s preeminent marine research institutions and other business, including the proposed addition of a student and visitor housing complex and a restaurant given existing traffic, parking and water supply issues? Should the Moss Landing Business Park be allowed to pursue millions of square feet of non-coastal development to allow economic flexibility? Will Highway 1 traffic and groundwater overdraft affect any such plans?

Future development and growth constraints in the small North Monterey County village drew the focus of a Monterey County Planning Commission workshop on a long-running community plan update process on Wednesday.

In the works for more than a decade, the Moss Landing community plan update effort is aimed at renewing the current plan adopted as part of the North County land-use plan in 1982. The commission has been conducting a series of workshops to review various aspects of the plan and its policies. Read more

Hartnell College trustees approves three-year contract for new president/superintendent

Hartnell College trustees announced they have approved a three-year contract for the Salinas Valley community college district’s new president/superintendent that starts in September. Hsieh will begin her employment Sept. 16 with an annual salary of $271,565 — the same as Lewallen’s current salary. Hsieh was not present for the vote but thanked the board for its support, which voted 6-1 in favor of the contract. The dissenting vote came from Trustee Ray Montemayor. Read more
