As is typical in summer, not a lot of local activity. Our last TC was at the Air Force Museum and hopes for finding a good date that a bunch of us can get together on is always a challenge during the June-August months. When our schedules start to settle down, we will need to get a date set for our next local TC. Updates on that as soon as we can. If you have something the group might be interested in joining in on, let us know.

Aviation Heritage Park Update
Here is a look at what Aviation Heritage Park will be looking like as time goes on. The initial ground preparation for the building is under way with more to come this fall. The latest news is that AHP now has the next aircraft in their hands and is in the beginning phases of restoration. It is a S-3H Sky King helicopter. It will  have the markings of "Marine One", that was piloted by Marine Col. Arthur "Mac" Reynolds. Check out the AHP website link for more details.

5 Great Reads/Videos For This Months TINS

To tide you over until we have our next TC with a guest speaker, here are a few interesting things to fill your time. Instead of one main story of a person or event this month in the TINS section, let's cover a few different stories. There are so many great stories to choose, I picked 5 that I thought you'd enjoy. If you have any that you would like to share with the pack, forward them to me so all can see them in future issues of the Spark.
One of the best TINS involving luck and great airmanship you will read about. Strap in and hang on.
Luck of the Irish
Hard to believe that the F-100 was never credited with a Mig Kill with all the sorties that it did in Vietnam. Or did it actually get one? Interesting read.
So Did An F-100 Get A Mig Kill?
Never heard of Capt. Royce Williams? Well, until just a few years ago, this story was still a still a secret from the Korean War. Now the details of this incredible story can be told. In addition to this story, a movie is in the works by former F-14 pilot Mark Vizcarra (who's father, Vic, is featured in the Spring High film below). So stay tuned for further updates.
Do You Know The Story of Capt. Royce Williams? You Should
Great book on how TOP GUN was started by the guy who started it, Capt. Dan Pederson. Here is a interviewer with Dan that really goes into details on how it all began. You can find Dan's book on Amazon. Great read on how Top Gun began but also on flying Navy fighters in the 60's.
How TOP GUN Got Started - Interview With Captian Dan Pederson
Here is a fantastic video spearheaded and promoted by Col. Vic Vizcarra, author of the book, "THUD PILOT"( Which is available on Amazon). He was one of the Thud pilots involved in this special mission and tells it like it was, over 54 years ago!
Here is what is one the website:
Three years in the making, “SPRING HIGH” is an animated masterpiece of the first Surface-To-Air-Missile (SAM) mission in the history of modern warfare. The Wild Weasels that were created from the Spring High mission has evolved to the Hunter Killers that exist today in the Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) in Air Warfare. The animation depicts the July 27th, 1965 raid by F-105’s of the USAF against SAM sites in North Vietnam. The historical detail and incredible computer-generated imagery of the F-105 that has been retired from active service for almost 30 years is extraordinary. This is a must see for military aviation enthusiasts!

Artist of the Month - Peter van Stigt

This month highlights artist Peter van Stigt

I have followed Peter on Facebook for years and his "artwork" is is just outstanding. I have a little about Peter here, a link to just a small sample of his work that I have placed in the Pack website media gallery, and a link to view and order his artwork.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"From a very young age, Peter van Stigt, born in Amsterdam in 1964, wanted to be a fighter pilot. However, his talents could not be found in Mathematics but in the artistic genes of his family. His father was his primary teacher in traditional art and graphic design. After an education at the Amsterdam Graphics College, Peter started out in the advertising world as a freelancer in 1986. Combining traditional art and his aviation passion was inevitable, and over the years, Peter focused purely on military aviation art. In 2005, he started teaching himself in the world of digital art. Since then, Peter has become one of the World’s leading digital aviation artists. Every now and then, he still draws and paints in the traditional way.

Peter’s mission is to capture the sheer dynamics of flight in a single still image. Get the audience strapped into the backseat of a plane and witness the ultimate rollercoaster first hand. He approaches his aviation art as aerial adventures that he experiences himself, based on sufficient airtime. Peter’s entire body of work depicts military aircraft. Not that his nature is a militaristic one, Peter is hooked on the aerodynamics, technology and flight performance of military planes. Since 2007, Peter produces his artwork solely based on his own inspiration, whenever he has the time and energy. Therefore, no commissions are accepted. Without that pressure to perform, both his creativity and productivity have improved considerably.

The international Airpower community in general and the Royal Netherlands Air Force in particular hold a special place in Peter’s heart. As a Gentleman’s Agreement any of his aviation art deemed relevant to the RNLAF may be used at their discretion. Next to producing aviation art, Peter is involved in several private foundations. Most notable are three jet fighter restoration projects: The Dutch Starfighter Foundation, restoring an F-104G, the Dutch NF-5 Flight, restoring an NF-5B and the Belgian Mirage 5 BD 09 Restoration Group. All these foundation volunteers are working very hard to get all three jet fighters in the air again. Lastly, Peter writes blogs and articles about the history and principles of Airpower."

I have added 19 photos plus a "self portrait" by Peter to the media gallery. And to see a lot of his work that is for sale, visit the link below.

We will be looking at the calendar to see about getting a TC going in the Louisville area when we can work it in. As always, if you have something that is of interest to the pack, send it my way and I will get it out to the group so we keep everyone involved with what we are up to.

If you have anything else, please forward them to me at kentuckianarr@gmail.com and I will get them in the next Spark.
