News from Hansen
Welcome to the latest News from Hansen. Our offices have seen plenty of excitement over the past few months, with the addition of three new partners and three award wins.

We recently completed a lengthy project for the Municipal Association of Victoria, preparing discussion papers to create a consistent planning response to climate change hazards between all ten municipalities around Port Phillip Bay. The land around the bay will be significantly impacted by climate change over the coming decades, in particular by sea-level rise, and we value the opportunity to contribute long term responses.

In July, the City of Knox held its inaugural Design Excellence Awards. Craig Czarny, Director, and Alastair Campbell, Associate, were pleased to be involved in this initiative which is raising the bar on local Urban Design Projects in the City of Knox.

Victoria Street, Kerang Wins Good Design Award

Hansen have received a prestigious Good Design Award in the Architectural Design category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation. Awarded for work on Victoria Street, Kerang, a landmark project commissioned by Gannawarra Shire Council. The design successfully transformed a space dominated by vehicle movement and car parking into a pedestrian oriented main street for movement and enjoyment.

The annual Good Design Awards is Australia’s most prestigious international awards for design and innovation with a history dating back to 1958. The Good Design Awards Jury praised Victoria Street, Kerang commenting “This low-key urban design has been sensitively planned to appreciate its rural location and is very well executed. The value that the design presents to the community is recognised in the considerable upgrade to social interaction that the design enables.

"The previously car dominated centre of this regional town has been reinvented as a place that elicits civic pride and promotes community use. Pedestrians are prioritised, patterns of use are changed, and important architectural buildings are given a new civic presence. The council, community and designers are to be congratulated for their long engagement to find an appropriate urban design solution.”

Ringwood Major Activity Centre
The Urban Design team has been actively involved in strategic design and planning of the Ringwood precinct for almost 20 years. Most recently they were engaged by Maroondah City Council to develop the Ringwood Major Activity Centre (MAC) Urban Design Guidelines. This document adopted by the Council in November 2018 sets the agenda for future built form outcomes that reinforce special qualities of Ringwood in terms of its townscape, its unique landscape characteristic and important attributes of key public spaces.
Hoddle Street, Richmond
The Planning team were pleased to see this project from 2016 reach completion. This new office space in Hoddle Street, Richmond was designed by Ha.Architecture as the new Melbourne HQ for McCorkell Brown Group. The office breaks new ground in energy neutral building design, with intelligent natural ventilation, and a solar array integrated into the roof. The design is a fine balance of form and function, with the geometry of the upper level providing natural light and positively contributing to its site context.
Windsor Siding Landscape Works
Our Landscape Architects are currently overseeing the next stage of works at Windsor Siding in the City of Stonnington.

Works include new lawns, gardens and trees, upgrading the plaza, pathways, lighting and furniture, plus resurfacing and line marking of the basketball court.

The masterplan, created by Hansen, included the staging of works to allow the project to progress according to priority, time and budgetary constraints. Work so far has included pathway connections, a new bmx track, lighting, a picnic shelter and gardens.
Landscape Architecture Award
In June, we were delighted to receive an AILA -Victoria Landscape Architecture Award for our Streets for People Feasibility Study (City of Darebin).

Congratulations to Connie, Gerhana and Danielle (pictured), the talented all- women urban design team, who delivered this project in collaboration with Martyn Group, City Form Lab (Harvard University) and Intermethod (SA).

'Streets for People' has embraced a multi-disciplinary approach of design and function to deliver authentic pedestrian oriented design outcomes.
Brown Street, Collingwood
This four-storey commercial building in Collingwood, designed by the team at Clare Cousins Architects, creates a stunning light box at night. Hansen secured planning approval for this building, which required creative consideration to manage the internal and external environments. The success of glass bricks, façade openings and tension cables add visual interest to the street. An open stair with vertical garden creates amenity within.  View more from the architects here
Hansen People
In June we were delighted to announce the appointment of three new partners, expanding the leadership group to a team of nine. The new partners, Gerhana Waty, Andrew Partos and Jane Keddie bring a wealth of expertise and knowledge across urban planning, urban design and landscape architecture to our multidisciplinary practice.
Gerhana Waty is an urban designer who champions pedestrian-oriented place creation. Her transit oriented development and streetscape upgrade projects have garnered local and international recognition. Gerhana's architectural background and extensive experience in delivering public realm improvement projects contribute to her diverse and multi-faceted urban design career.
Jane Keddie is a planner who has experience across a wide range of planning and strategic design projects. She thrives on larger scale strategic planning and design projects that require thought and foresight to resolve complex issues. She has particular experience and interest in the planning of regional cities and centres, sustainability and planning for climate change including coastal hazards.
Andrew Partos is an architect, landscape architect and urban designer. His expertise spans residential, institutional, infrastructure, commercial and public projects ranging from city revitalisation projects to small public parks. He is interested in ensuring places engage people at multiple levels, not only should places be functional and beautiful but should also provide a narrative about their place in society, their history, context and the people who inhabit them. ⠀
Hansen Events
Hansen Lab Sessions
Hansen Lab Sessions are a forum to allow our team to investigate the matter of our built, natural and social environment. They are part of our ongoing commitment to explore questions that matter, share knowledge, and interrogate what we do and how we do it. We have recently had presentations from Roz Hansen on the genesis of the practice, Brendon Burke and Emma Groot (Botanical Balconies) on plant care, and Sara and Gavin from Hip v Hype came in for a chat about socially responsible solutions for our cities.
Hansen Trivia Night
The 2019 Trivia night was a great success. We raised a total of $1141.26 for Women for Women in Africa - a charity helping to educate children from Kibera, providing a lifeline that allows people to forge a better life for themselves and their families. Thanks to everyone who supported the event and to Director, Andrew Partos, for all your hard work bringing it together. The below images are from Andrew's trip to Kibera, Nairobi this July to visit the two sponsored students, Brighton and Naom.
