ECSA 2020 - call for proposals now open

The call for proposals for the third international ECSA conference is now online! Submissions are welcomed under eight themes and in several formats  - you can read more on the conference website. The deadline for proposals is 29 September 2019 and we looking forward to receiving them. You can also see who is part of our programme committee for the event.

ECSA Wikipedia page

We now have a Wikipedia page! Very many thanks to Dr Cornelia Veja from DIPF at the Leibniz-Institut für Bildungsforschung und Bildungsinformation for writing and uploading it. Please take a look and, if you think there are edits required, make these directly. That way, our page will continually be updated as ECSA develops.

EU-Citizen.Science

The project’s first joint newsletter on citizen science has been sent out - if you haven't done so yet, you can subscribe here. Over the course of this project, some content from the ECSA website will move across to the platform; we will keep you updated when this happens.

Classifying millions of galaxies – with a little help from citizen science

Our latest blog post looks at how citizen science data, generated through the Galaxy Zoo project, is now helping to train state-of-the-art AI algorithms to classify images of thousands of galaxies.

City Nature Challenge 2019

This international urban biodiversity competition, in which citizen scientists collect species observations in their city, was held in April and May this year. You can see the results on their website or read updates from the Italian cities involved in the project on Facebook.

Alien species survey

A new survey is collecting information on citizen science projects involving alien species in Europe. This survey is linked to COST Action CA17122 - Alien CSI - Increasing understanding of alien species through citizen science
ECSA project updates

First D-NOSES pilot cases have started
The D-NOSES project is reaching the halfway mark. In these last 16 months, the team has co-created the International Odour Observatory, developed and launched the OdourCollect app (available on Android and iPhone), engaged in numerous networking and engagement activities, written a policy brief on odour pollution and launched the first five pilot cases. The ECSA team is finalising the selection of the German pilot case, due to begin within the next three months. European Clean Air Day

The first European Clean Air Day was held on 20 June 2019, organized by the ECSA Working Group on Air Quality, with events held in nine different cities. You can read more about these activities on this blog post.

14 August 2019

Place-Based Citizen Science (PBCS) is an emerging field. An in-depth, rich and focused discussion on the challenges of PBCS will be held during a one-day conference at Cardiff University School of Social Sciences.

9-13 September 2019

The 49th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland will be held in, Münster, Germany, under the theme ‘Science Meets Practice’.

24-26 September 2019

Registration is now open for European Research and Innovation Days, the inaugural event organised by DG Research & Innovation of the European Commission. Follow @EUScienceInnov on Twitter or Facebook using the conference hashtag #RiDaysEU to stay informed about all developments.

26-27 September 2019

The Forum Citizen Science in Münster, Germany, will focus on ‘Die Zukunft der Bürgerforschung / The future of Citizen Science’, and will include a poster presentation about the EU-Citizen.Science platform.

7 October 2019

The first Danish Citizen Science Symposium takes place in Odense, Denmark, later this year.

A thinking tool from the NewHoRRIzon project

This tool helps you reflect on the societal readiness of the different stages of your project, using guided questions that help you implement the RRI principles in your research.

Horizon Europe survey

Citizens are invited to contribute to co-designing and help shaping the future research and innovation investment through an online questionnaire. The results will inform the work on the first Strategic Plan of Horizon Europe.

Citizen science in ecology in India

A new report from the DST Centre for Policy Research provides an initial mapping and analysis of citizen science in India, based on a study of 17 projects in the field of ecology. You can read it here.
