Temporary Workers Needed ASAP for
U.S. Census 2020 Address Canvassing

The hiring of hundreds of thousands of temporary workers for the 2020 Census – often described as the nation’s largest civilian mobilization — is now underway.

The Census Bureau has already begun recruiting and hiring people to work on an important preliminary operation for the 2020 Census that begins in August.

Known as In-Field Address Canvassing, this is the process of having field staff visit specific geographic areas to identify every place where people live or could live. The staff then compare what they see on the ground to the existing census address list. They verify, correct, or add address and location information.

Thanks to key innovations and new technology including spatial imagery, address canvassing will be easier to do, less labor intensive and more cost efficient than in years past.

Once the Address Canvassing operation is completed in October 2019, the Census Bureau will finalize the address list for the 2020 Census. That list will be used to mail out invitations to complete the 2020 Census.

Thousands of Workers Needed

The Census Bureau is working to fill thousands of positions nationwide in order to update this address list.

Applying for one of these jobs is simple. Just visit 2020census/jobs or call 855-JOB-2020 and select option 3 for more information. Pay rates for field and clerical jobs can be found at: 2020census.gov/jobs/locations/national-map.html.

Those who are being considered for a position will receive a telephone interview. If offered a job, they will receive instructions on next steps via email.

Applicants will need to complete paperwork online and make an appointment to get fingerprinted for the background check. Once they are offered the job, there will be a period of time before their start date to allow time for the background clearance process. To search for possible management positions, go to USAjobs.gov.

If applicants are not selected for the Address Canvassing operation, they may be called when other positions open later this year or in 2020.   Their applications will remain on file.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

When was the last time you checked to see if your immune system is up to date?  This August, National Immunization Awareness Month raises awareness and encourages everyone to make sure they are current on the necessary vaccinations for potentially harmful diseases.  Many diseases can be easily prevented by administering vaccines, and protect you from unseen viruses.  Take the necessary precautions with a simple call to your doctor, and avoid potential harm while leading a healthy, happy life.

All adults should get the influenza (flu) vaccine each year to protect against the flu season, and a TD (tetanus and diphtheria) booster vaccine every 10 years.  Adult 60 years and older are recommended to receive the shingles vaccine.  And adults 65 and older are recommended to receive one or more pneumococcal vaccines.

Some adults may need other vaccines (hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and HPV) depending on age, occupation, travel, medical conditions, previous vaccinations or some other consideration.  That’s why you should talk to your doctor to make sure you have all the vaccines you need

Getting vaccinated is easier than you think.  They are available in your doctors’ office, at your pharmacy, at community health clinics, and local health departments.  Most health insurance plans cover the cost of recommended vaccines.

It's National Eye Exam Month

For many of us, July marks the halfway point of summer vacation and soon preparations for returning to school will begin. Getting a vision exam is part of that process. Healthy vision is key to your overall health and it helps children have a great start to their school year!

Deteriorating vision can be an early indicator of other health issues. Getting vision exams on a regular schedule helps doctors to identify issues in the early stages.

HOW TO OBSERVE
  • Check with your optometrist to see when you are due for a comprehensive vision exam
  • Check with your insurance company for your vision coverage or contact KIPDA for vision coverage resources
  • If you, your child, or your grandchild are experiencing symptoms, be sure to make an appointment as soon as possible
  • For more information visit www.cdc.gov.
  • Use #NationalVisionExamMonth to share on social media and remind others that JULY is a great time to FOCUS ON EYE HEALTH!

17th Annual World Fest is this        Labor Day Weekend
“WorldFest, one of the region’s largest international festivals, celebrates its 17th anniversary with four days of expanded world food, music, dance, culture and education this Labor Day weekend.”

"Cities that embrace and encourage their international citizens and cultures will thrive, have a stronger quality of life and will attract new growth and jobs,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. 'WorldFest is a great event for exploring and celebrating Louisville’s many faces and cultures and we always look to make it more vibrant, diverse and educational. So, it’s exciting to add many new features and attractions for the 17th Annual WorldFest.”

With over 100 languages spoken in the Louisville public schools and 35 percent of the city’s population growth over the past 16 years coming from international residents from over 150 different countries throughout the world, Louisville is more culturally diverse than ever before.”

KIPDA will have an outreach booth again this year. Come visit us and learn about the many services KIPDA provides for the community and especially our international older adult population.

Transportation Division

KIPDA Transportation Division Accepts Award at 2019 Conference of the National Association of Development Districts (NADO)
Formerly Ticket to Ride, Every Commute Counts has been re-branded in an effort to increase awareness of their mission to reduce the number of single occupancy drivers.  The refreshed brand includes new branded vehicles, a brand-new website platform for commuters to register as well as an integrated advertising campaign.

“We’re trying to change behavior, which is a really tall ask,” said Program Manager Stacey Burton.  “And we knew the only way we could tackle that challenge was to create a new brand platform for what we do that would begin to change perceptions about the benefits of ride sharing.”

KIPDA’s regional ride sharing program was established in 1999 to improve mobility, reduce congestion and enhance the quality of life in the KIPDA region by developing and promoting convenient, reliable and cost effective transportation alternatives as well as reducing single occupancy vehicles (SOV).

Every Commute Counts encourages the use of all alternatives to the Single Occupancy Vehicle (SOV). This is accomplished by promoting public transit (TARC), walking, and/or utilizing their rideshare matching service to find a carpool, van-pool, or bike-pool.  ECC maintains a database of commuters in the Kentuckiana region who have registered on their website.  Once registered, a commuter is provided with a list of others who live and work near them and have similar work schedules.  Registering and ride matching with ECC is a free service. Commuters then reach out to their matches to join or form a carpool, van-pool, or bike-pool.

ECC provides an Emergency Ride Home benefit to all registered car-poolers, van-poolers, bike-poolers or TARC riders in the event of an emergency, like having a child get sick or mandatory overtime. Whether you take a taxi, schedule a ride from Uber or Lyft, ECC will reimburse riders 100% of the cost of their approved ride including tip, up to 100 miles.  ECC also provides assistance to employers’ to address their workers’ commuting needs and help develop sustainable commute policies and customized incentive programs.
