Simplicity

Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.
— Chopin

Last September, I visited a mysterious hotel in Umbria inside of a converted 17th-century monastery. The owner was a famed Italian fashion designer who spent a decade near Careyes, Mexico running an intimate retreat but had recently returned to his homeland to channel the same experience. The hotel was modest yet luxurious in every facet. After a truly peaceful stay, we asked what the owner what his aspirations for the hotel were to which he replied, "How much does it cost to have nothing?"

"When you realize that everything is staged, then nothing is staged." - N.F.
A cheeky podcast from two Brits who focus on the shift from maximalism to minimalism. I chose this episode specifically as there is an interesting discussion on compulsory consumption and an excerpt from this essay called "Simple" which I highly recommend reading. Fast forward through the introduction to ~16m20sec.
Summit Prairie, a vacation home atop a tower deep in the Oregon wilderness, doesn’t have many amenities. There’s no Wi-Fi, no TV, no clock. It’s about an hour from gas and groceries. The nearest bathroom is an outhouse down four flights of outdoor stairs, unless visitors want to make use of a funnel attached to the edge of the deck. And it’s closed the entire month of August because it might burn down in a wildfire. Yet travelers are lining up to stay here. It has a 300-person wait list and spots for the year book within minutes
Cost of Simplicity
Real Life Magazine
Where “lifestyle” might once have referred to one’s general mode of living, it now refers to the fact that even the smallest detail of one’s everyday reality is capable of being documented, and thus subject to the same aesthetic and semiotic rigor as one’s style of furnishing or dress. “Influencers” — the marketing term for popular users of Instagram, Snapchat, or YouTube, with the power to guide their followers’ purchases — traffic not only in desirable appearances, or home décor, or even experience, but also in less tangible qualities: The upshot of all that desirable living has to look, to followers, like the good life. In return, content creators can garner thousands of dollars per post by integrating their sponsors’ products into their feeds.
Frédéric Chopin, the Polish Romantic era composer, was a man who felt comfortable with his own musical style. So comfortable, in fact, that he once played faultlessly for almost an hour in pitch dark when the salon’s lights were extinguished before a performance. The offer was made to re-light the lamps, but Chopin refused. His performance was so affecting that Franz Liszt, Chopin’s great ‘frenemy’ who was in attendance that evening, conceded that Chopin was a “true poet” whose works could not be improved upon.

La Casita

Only the essential at this little retreat in Puerto Escondido known as "La Casita". Located off the beaten path from the City of Oaxaca and inspired by Henry David Thoreau's "Walden", Casa Tiny is a place to live it up while doing absolutely nothing. Book soon though, the secret is out.

The Light Phone

If you haven't caught the drift of this issue's theme, then hopefully this will help: the Light Phone is a slim, card-card sized device designed to be used as little as possible. Carrying only the now byzantine ability to make and receive phone calls, the LP is designed to be your "phone away from phone".

Eremito, Hotel Del Alma

I've held of on sharing this special oasis in fear that it would spoil the secret that is the magical Eremito. Located deep in the woods of Umbria, is a retreat for the tranquil adventurer. The Eremito is only accessible by 4x4 vehicle and with no cellphone reception, one must call the hotel as they exit the highway in the nearby town to await pick up and prepare for complete digital isolation for the length of their stay. The Eremito is a place for those who want to truly decompress, spend time with themselves or in the intimate company of others, and ultimately, enjoy the simplicity of their surroundings.
