‘Step in, speak out for Great Lakes’
IJC meetings in Collingwood (August 6) and Goderich (August 7)

Team of regional agencies, organizations and local governments partner with International Joint Commission (IJC) to host panel discussion and community conversation

Great Lakes meetings are held in United States and Canada; meetings visit Collingwood, Goderich in August

After the International Joint Commission's August 6, 2019 stop in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada, the IJC’s second meeting on Lake Huron, as part of the binational organization’s ‘Step In and Speak Out for the Great Lakes’ tour, is in Goderich, Ontario on  August 7.

These events give area residents an opportunity to learn and talk about Lake Huron and Great Lakes water quality.

Find out more at Healthy Lake Huron - Clean Water, Clean Beaches: The meetings will bring together area residents with local experts, professionals and advocates to discuss their priorities for restoring and protecting Lake Huron and the Great Lakes.

The International Joint Commission is a Canadian-United States treaty organization that seeks to prevent and resolve issues facing the two countries’ boundary waters. By engaging the public on their perspectives of Great Lakes health and completing its own research on issues facing the lakes, the IJC evaluates both countries’ efforts to restore the Great Lakes ecosystem based on the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement’s goals and objectives.

Love Your Great Lakes

You are invited to ‘show your lake some love’ with photos of how you protect Lake Huron

Enter first Love Your Greats photo contest for chance to win Great Lakes prizes in celebration of Love Your Greats Day

A day to celebrate our Great Lakes, called Love Your Greats, takes place on Saturday, August 10, 2019. Love Your Greats is held the second Saturday of every August, and promotes education and local action to protect our Great Lakes.

This year, Ausable Bayfield Conservation would like to see that action and invites the community to share their actions in the form of a photo contest. “Throughout the watershed, homeowners, farmers, businesses, community groups and other organizations have been working to protect Lake Huron, and it is important to recognize and celebrate these efforts,” said Hope Brock, Healthy Watersheds Specialist with Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA). “The hope is that you will share with us your photos illustrating what you do to protect Lake Huron.”

The photos of what you do to protect Lake Huron might include, but are not limited to, photos showing rain barrels, rain gardens, wetlands, natural areas, trees, permeable pavement, cover crops, minimum or no-till fields, berms, grassed waterways, buffers, exclusion fencing, or beach cleanups. “If your photo has a story to tell, we encourage you to share that as well,” said Brock. “No matter how large or small, we are interested in seeing all the actions you take to protect Lake Huron.” Often, when people share what they have done on their own properties, it inspires others to take positive actions as well, she said.

You may submit your photo to the contest simply by posting a photo showing what you or your family does to protect Lake Huron by replying to the Love Your Greats photo contest post on the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Facebook page, or Twitter feed, with the hashtag #LYGLakeHuron. Or, you may send your photo, by email, with #LYGLakeHuron Photo Contest in the subject of the email, to info@abca.ca. To be eligible for the contest, photos should be posted or received by Monday, August 12, 2019 at noon local time. The complete set of contest rules are posted online at abca.ca at this web page: By using the #LYGLakeHuron hashtag you are agreeing to the rules of the contest.

The watershed Twitter feed is at this link: The watershed Facebook page is at this link: Three winners of the photo contest will be drawn at random and will receive a Love Your Greats or Great Lakes T-shirt, hat, or similar prize.
