With back-to-school season fast approaching, our minds are occupied by thoughts of education and growth - and not just for the kids. We’ve chosen to look at these dog days of summer with a renewed sense of self-improvement. It’s as good a time as any to recommit to lifelong learning and those goals that we set for ourselves so many months ago.

LEARN

From fitness to cooking to computer programming, Pittsburgh has plenty to offer when it comes to free and affordable classes this month. Check out this list and learn something new.

TRY

Don't feel like leaving the house to improve your mind? We feel you. With so many low-to-no-cost online learning resources at your fingertips, it’s never been easier to master a valuable skill or brush up on an interesting topic right from your couch.

READ

Now that we’re more than halfway through 2019 (where does the time go?), maybe you're looking at what you wanted to accomplish this year and where you wanted to be. If you’re unhappy with your progress, there's still time to catch up. Find out how to set tangible and achievable goals. Then step back, reevaluate, and recommit to a successful year.

MOVE

If your resolutions include health and wellness, sunny late-summer weather provides the perfect setting for a workout. Get outside and go for a walk, run, or bike ride along the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage (GAP).

TEST

Think back to your school days (for some of us, this will require more concentration than others). You may remember dreading group projects, loving presenting, or preferring something different altogether. That’s because we all learn in different ways. In fact, there are seven styles of learning: spatial, auditory-musical, linguistic, kinesthetic, mathematical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. Take a brief test to discover how you learn best.

If you'd like to support the GAP trail, you can help the Allegheny Trail Alliance (ATA), an organization that maintains the trail, do a bit of learning themselves. Complete their confidential survey by August 12. You'll be providing useful information for the future of the trail, plus you’ll be entered to win a $50 REI gift card or an official Great Allegheny Passage jersey!
